Unique forward prospect who did a little bit of everything on the floor. Was often an one man fast break starter. Grabbing rebounds and launching outlets, or dribbling it himself to push the tempo. Along with the skill, he had his hard hat on. As he produced 18 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.

A regular double double threat and rim protector for his Class B squad. Since an opening season loss to Dover, Hellman and the Chiefs have ran off 25 straight victories. And now are only one win away from their first State Tournament appearance since 1974. While his DNA is that of a workhorse around the rim, he’s worked hard on his all around game. Is a good passer. With outlet passes, passing out of the short roll, and other moments of being the offensive hub. Along with post ups and putbacks, he can also face up and attack out of the high post. Super productive senior, who’s looking to cap off his high school career with a trip to OKC to open the new Coliseum.

Reed Hellman is a 6’5 forward from Oklahoma that was a huge difference maker on Legacy Youth Basketball at the Grind Region Finals. In the paint he uses his body to create space between him and his defenders to make easy looks under the basket. When handling the ball off of defensive stops he often gets downhill creating transition points for his teammates and himself. He hustles for plenty of boards on both ends of the floor. Reeds skill is far advanced as he can definitely contribute well on the next level.

What’s Next for Reed?
Reed, currently ranked 15th in his position in Oklahoma and a top player in the state, possesses the ability to leverage his frame effectively when up close. Given his diverse skills at the forward position, it wouldn’t be surprising if he receives a couple of offers before his senior year ends.

There is something to be said for a big guy who is always in the right place at the right time. Whether in zones or in man-to-man defense, being in the right spot is absolutely critical for a big man, and Reed nails it every single time. Not necessarily a big shot blocker or steals guy, but when you’re in the right position all the time, those stats aren’t needed. Teams tend to turn the ball over or take bad shots at that point.

Has a methodical fundamental game. He is very Tim Duncan-like, very consistent and plays winning basketball and doesn’t complain much. He uses the glass around the rim most times and never misses in there, and still has a soft touch when in front of the basket. Reed plays well in zone defense because he is mobile enough to switch out on small guards on the wing. He plays hard and has a huge gas tank for a big man, more like a CAT engine with diesel fuel. He is definitely the most fundamentally sound big man in the tournament.

Reed Hellman has a nice handle on the ball for his position playing wing/power forward throughout the tournament making plays for himself and others off defensive rebounds. He handled the ball like a guard at times against 1 Nation 16U going coast to coast using his physical frame to carve out room in the paint. Reed had a nice touch around the basket finishing plays by shielding defenders positioning himself for good looks. His effort rebounding the basketball was evident. Reed Hellman is a very skilled big man that I think can fit well into a forward position comfortably.

His toughness and willingness to battle inside give Legacy a dependable interior threat who can control the block and wear down defenders over the course of a game.

He is a constant communicator on defense and helped keep his teammates in position to get stops. He is very strong which helped him fight for positioning and create easy looks for himself at the rim. Hellman also did a great job of contesting shots whether they were coming to him at the rim or if he had to close out onto shooters along the perimeter.
