Van Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
The New Mexico State signee bought such an impact to the court and should be a huge piece City College this year. Not only does he bring the size needed at 6’5, but it is also his willingness to compete and fight for his team. When they were down 15 he continue to play with a high motor, got on the boards (7 rebounds) and offensively showed his ability to score from levels leading the Knights in scoring with 20 points on 6-17 from the field. Smith certainly gets it done on both sides of the ball.

-Thought he did a great job of guarding up several positions in his matchup with Ward on the low block. Smith didn’t make anything easy for the top-50 senior while impacting the game at the offensive end as a distributor in the 1H and a scorer in the 2H. Loved the vision on a 1-handed push pass diagonally across the paint to a cutter who laid the ball up off glass and executed a beautiful crosscourt skip pass to the shooter off a baseline drive later in the 2Q. Smith showed the full range at the offensive end of the floor in the 2H: scoring off a coast to coast drive to the rim, hit a tough contested pull-up 2 over two defenders, scored on a high pickup lay in transition, scored another C2C bucket off a long rebound late in the game to tie it up, and hit a beautiful baseline rip and go to land a ferocious 1-handed dunk to cut the Largo lead to 3 with 20 seconds left in the contest. Loved the moxy and competitive streak shown from Smith throughout the game at both ends of the floor as the fearless leader of his team.

was one of the top scorers and names through the whole event. New Mexico State is getting a pure 3-level scoring guard who can fill it up in many ways. Smith spent the weekend showcasing deep bag, scoring off tough drives to the rim, or taking a dribble or two into a nice elevated pull-up jumper from about 22 feet. He has some very underrated strength at the basket, finishing multiple and-ones with either hand. Knocked down a fair amount of free-throws and three-pointers. Phenomenal scoring outburst from Smith, totaling 43 in a South Lake showdown and 30+ next game out over Stephen Decatur.

14p 3r 1a 1s vs New World
Some notable improvements as a ballhandler, passer, and defender for Smith in this one. The marquee trait will always be his ability to hit shots from anywhere on the court but the handle getting him to those spots is looking more fluid. His lateral quickness has improved and shows more often at the defensive end of the floor while he is starting to really get off the ground for some rebounds and finishes above the rim. Impacting the game in other statistical categories will only improve his value for the next level.
