Expert Analysis
Michael Roth | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the most athletic players in Ohio, Riep had two monster slam dunks and was everywhere defensively as well. Riep had the Oak Hill fans going crazy in the first half when he rose up and slammed it over a Lakota West defender. Defensively, Riep finished with three steals and three blocks, flying around the court. If Riep can develop a confident 3-point shot, he could make a huge impact at Ashland, one of the better Division II programs in the region.

I continue to be impressed with Ashland’s in-state recruiting, getting some of the top Division II prospects on a yearly basis to commit to their program. Riep is the next in line for their team as he provides a ton of value as a run and jump wing who wants to play above the rim. Through two games Riep is averaging 15.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG and 3 defensive stocks (blocks + steals). If Riep can down the line develop a reliable 3-point shot, he has the ability to be an all conference level player for Ashland.

Another former prep hoops circuit star, Riep made a ton of noise with Elite Mentality these past few years. A big time athlete, Riep had his breakout performance at our Ohio State Tournament in May. I liked seeing Riep in an open setting like Elite Mentality and a half-court setting at Oak Hills. Being able to play both styles will be crucial as he prepares for the college level. With offers from Kentucky Wesleyan and Fairmont State, Riep has gained interest from some of the top Division II programs in the region.

The standout performer for Elite Mentality, Riep has been getting very familiar with the rim when he hangs on the rim after a dunk. Having around four to five dunks in each of his teams first two games, Riep has been active in transition and looking for opportunities to throw the hammer down. Looking more fluid as an athlete since I last saw him in December, Riep is moving easily in transition and playing with more burst and pop in the half-court. A rip through baseline into a slam dunk was a move Riep wasn’t making as effortlessly a couple months ago. One of the major stock risers this weekend, Riep is due for a massive rankings boost during the post summer update.

A prospect who saw his season come to an end against Imade’s Sycamore squad, Riep showed a lot of growth this season in a handful of areas on the court. Riep averaged 11.4 PPG but I was more impressed with his 7.1 RPG. Showing toughness in the paint is a key area of growth for Riep, who has the ball handling a fluidity to play on the perimeter. Riep also threw down some impressive dunks this season, including an alley-oop in the playoff loss to Sycamore. If Riep can improve his perimeter shooting percentages (18% 3-point, 54% free throw) he will continue to rise up our rankings. I expect scholarship programs to be heavy after Riep this summer.

A prospect I first saw on the Prep Hoops Circuit, Riep has big time athleticism for a wing forward and has an impressive summer highlight tape from his time with Elite Mentality. Just starting to blossom with his physical tools and putting it together to lead to production, Riep could be a breakout star in arguably the toughest conference top to bottom in the state.

A prep hoops circuit standout, Riep shows a lot of potential as a forward and is ready to break onto the scene this winter. At his third school in three years, Riep was at La Salle as a freshman and Princeton as a Sophomore before transferring to Oak Hills for this season. With his size, athleticism and ability to run the floor, Riep is a dangerous prospect in transition to stop. Starting to turn his physical tools into production this summer on the prep hoops circuit, Riep will look to carry that momentum into one of the toughest public school leagues in the state this winter. Watch out for Riep as a player who could see his name explode onto the scene this year.

Intriguing forward prospect who jumped passing lanes with his wingspan and looked to get out in transition. Showing some shooting potential with a confidence and smooth release, Riep hit shots from the corner and the free throw line. I thought Riep rebounded the ball well at both ends of the court and showed some ball handling flashes in transition. Really like his long-term upside as a 3 and D forward at the small college level. Has a lot of physical tools to keep improving with and should be productive in the ultra-competitive GMC this winter.
