Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the most prolific scorers across the state this year, Barnes had an uncharacteristically off night from an efficiency standpoint but was still able to showcase himself as a potential D1 guard despite his team being clearly overmatched. The southpaw struggled getting shots to fall but was nonetheless largely effective in getting to his spots off the bounce and creating space for his pullup shots. He showed deceptive strength while working toward the rim off the dribble and consistent mechanics on his pullup with range out to 3. His level of competitiveness also never wavered despite the score starting to get out of hand well before halftime. It was far from Barnes’ best performance but still one in which his talent was able to shine through.

Coming off a 45-point effort, Barnes is now the leading scorer in all of District 3 while getting William Penn out to a 13-6 start and positioning the Bearcats for a run at a district title. The southpaw is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands, getting to his spots off the bounce seemingly on command and showing an advanced ability to finish among the trees. While he’s now averaging north of 30 points per game on the year, he’s also shown the ability to manage a game without scoring and make his teammates better as a facilitator. Barnes just received his first pair of D1 offers and should have a few chances to generate more buzz in district and state playoffs before heading into the grassroots season.

The left-handed guard may just be the best playmaker of an amazing group of 2027 guards. Barnes is great getting his teammates involved while also making sure to hold up his end of the scoring. His quick burst helps him get to the basket with ease where he excels finishing through contact. A steadily improving shooter, Nasir is in for an exciting junior season where York William Penn hopes to avenge a loss in the York-Adams League championship.

Barnes’ team was put against stout competition as they faced off against Archbishop Spalding and Blake High School respectively. Both contests resulted in a loss from York William Penn, but the 6-foot-2 southpaw guard gave the local fans plenty to cheer about as he averaged just under 19 points per game. Barnes can get to his spots in a variety of ways, but is best in ball screens or reacting off the catch where he can use his wiggle and burst to attack closeouts and get into the paint or stop on a dime for mid-range jumpers. Look for Barnes to post some crooked scoring numbers this season for his team as the offensive hub.

Barnes made the return home to York after a brief detour to Baltimore power Mount St. Joseph, arriving just in time to lead William Penn after a standout freshman season at York Suburban. A dynamic southpaw playmaker who can hurt you as a scorer or facilitator, he’s extremely shifty and deceptive with the ball in pursuit of his spots. He shows the ability to consistently shoulder a heavy playmaking load as a prolific passer who sees plays ahead of schedule. It’s easy to see why he’s garnered D1 interest already, with his growth as a perimeter shooter in the coming 12-18 months going a long way toward determining what level his recruitment ultimately reaches.

-Barnes put together a balanced offensive performance in a big win in the title game for his bracket. Barnes can get to the rim, is pretty efficient on pull-ups at the elbow, and hit perimeter shots that made it really difficult for his matchup to face-guard him. What he lacks in explosive back foot burst he makes up with in taking the right angles on drives to the rim or coming flat off of ball screens to set himself up for good looks at the basket. Showed a pretty complete offensive game, getting his teammates involved on drives to the rim after his first half scoring put the help defense on red alert to his presence.

Barnes is a slashing point guard who always found ways to stay relevant in the game. He did a great job of getting paint touches and navigating downhill. Barnes was a frequent customer at the foul line. He stepped out to behind the three point line to show he can make a three. He also found his teammates for scoring looks of their own.

During William Penn’s win on Friday night over Eastern York, Barnes got downhill often and relentlessly attacked the paint for floaters and lay-ins. Several of his dribble drives into the lane produced whistles. On those occasions Barnes calmly went to the line a knocked down his freebies. Barnes also tossed in a three-ball for good measure. When the final horn sounded, Barnes had posted 25 points. It was the sixth time this season Barnes has scored 20 or more points in a game. Barnes in one of the top 2027 prospects in the area and he should have a monster post season.
