Nkugwa must’ve thrown down a handful of dunks in Wednesday’s matchup. He started the game off strong by driving hard to his left hand for a couple finishes early, and then he had a burst in the second half where he got on the break for a couple dunks in transition off of steals. For the cherry on top, he completely dunked on someone’s head in the final minutes of the game. There’s no question Nkugwa’s a freak athlete, it’ll just be about whether he can create enough shots, especially when going right, at the D1 level. The Vermont commit had an awesome high school career. Congrats to him.

What Stood Out: Feel for the Game
Nkugwa has long been noted for his elite athleticism, standing out as a perimeter defender, threat to score in the open floor, and high level off ball cutter. He’s lean and will probably need to add some mass at the next level, but has great physical attributes including long arms and wiry strength. On this occasion, it was his ability to make plays as an offensive initiator that really stood out. He handled the ball against pressure, made good reads out of ball screens, and quickly moved the ball to find open shooters. Combine that with his ability to get downhill off the bounce as a finisher and you have a well-rounded guard that has the potential to play on or off the ball at the next level.

Another day, another pair of ridiculous dunks for Nkugwa. Momo is a ridiculous athlete who’s beyond difficult to stop when getting to his left hand, and he has some really nice touch in the paint on a variety of floater shots. He does a good job, too, of getting out of trouble with the dribble and gaining a head of steam in transition. He can also knock down the three ball. I wonder whether he’ll be able to be as effective as a driver at the next level, but some improvement using his right hand would be monumental for his chances to get minutes at Vermont next year.

Nkugwa was the best athlete on the floor, and it wasn’t particularly close. He’s a menace in transition and jumps out of the gym with ease, and he’s incredibly tough to stop when driving to his left hand. He can also knock down the open three. Defensively, he plays a high risk, high reward game, often looking for steals and leak outs, but he can also sit down and guard when he needs to. The Vermont commit has a serious chance to turn some heads at the D1 level with his freak athleticism and microwave scoring ability.

Nkugwa is an athletic guard who is moments away from making a highlight play. He is an elite slasher who is able to get easy scoring chances moving without the basketball. He has a good feel for the game and has no issue setting up his teammates for success. He is a stalwart defender and uses his speed and athleticism on that end.

Nkugwa put the finishing touches on his recruitment when he announced that he’ll attend the University of Vermont. A high flying guard at Governor’s Academy, Nkugwa had a strong showing this summer with the Mass Rivals and lands at one of New England’s top college programs. The lefty is a dynamic athlete that can guard all three perimeter positions, is terrific defensively at the point of attack, and can really rebound from the guard spot. Offensively, he’s electric in transition where he does a great job of finishing around the rim. He’s continued to improve his perimeter jumper which has helped to open up his driving game. Not only is he an athletic and powerful finisher at the rim, but he’s show the ability to finish plays with some creativity as well. Vermont continues to recruit at a high level and landing Nkugwa should help to keep them competitive in the America East, as he profiles as a future all-league candidate.

Nkugwa was the best player on the court by a mile. The lefty guard is an absolutely freight train in transition and can really elevate at the hoop. He has excellent body control and can even shoot it from three, too. Defends as well — there’s not much Nkugwa can’t do.

Nkugwa, a 1st Team All-NEPSAC honoree this winter, is an elite athlete on the wing. A threat to score every time he touches the ball in transition, Nkugwa puts an immense amount of pressure on the defense in the open floor. The lefty is a high riser that can absolutely punish rims but has also shown an ability to create as a scorer with the ball in his hands. Defensively, he has an elite combination of athleticism, length, and quickness that allows him to be effective both as an on-ball stopper and a weakside helper that protects the rim. His physical tools are next level; as he continues to expand his skill set on the offensive end of the floor, his ceiling and recruitment should take off.
