Portnoy can score the basketball with some of the best in his class but when it comes to his playmaking ability that is where he takes his game to another level. He can break down defenses quickly with his handles forcing defenders to have to come over and help allowing him to kick the ball out to open shooters on the perimeter. He will look to run the pick-n-roll or pick-n-pop whenever he can and makes clean-cut passes to cutting teammates.

Portnoy is a player that can affect the game in every single way depending on the situation. He can score as well as anyone with his tight handles and ability to create his offense off the dribble. He works the midrange game well and gets shot over most players with his 6’3″ size. He crashes the glass like a center flying in from the perimeter to grab rebounds. Portnoy also has nice playmaking ability looking to set up his teammates for open shots on pick-n-pops and dive cuts to the basket.

Portnoy lives in the midrange and painted area and has a large pile of moves he can go to. He will not be denied no matter who you put on him when he is driving into the paint. He goes straight up with multiple defenders around him and will either seek the contact or do an athletic finish around the rim evading defenders in the air. Portnoy can create something out of nothing and can play isolation ball if the opportunity is there. He is money on the pull-up or fading away midrange shot.

Portnoy is a shifty 6’3″ guard that can do a lot of great things on the offensive side of the ball. He has quick and tight handles to get into the paint and finishes over the top of bigger defenders. Portnoy is a magician around the rim doing a multitude of crafty moves. He even has sneaky athleticism to fly into the lane for the jam. The midrange game for Portnoy is also consistent as he can hit the pull-up shot at a high rate.

Portnoy has had a strong junior season for the Vikings as he has showed his versatility. The 6’2 guard plays with his head up in the half court as he is able to find open teammates for layups and jumpers. Portnoy knows how to get to his spot on the floor and rises up with confidence on his jumper. He is a good finisher around the basket and is a strong rebounder. Portnoy’s ability to do a little bit of everything on the floor is something that will help Eastern in a big way during the state tournament.
