Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Cummins is an explosive playmaking guard who really gets it done on both ends. He’s a past-first guard whose lateral quickness and burst help him consistently get into gaps and evade pressure. He’s also a tenacious on-ball defender. His season averages on the Grind Session were 13.2 points, 9.0 assists, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game.

Another new addition from Mode Prep, Cummins is a sneaky athletic guard who can set the tempo and does a great job getting others involved. He’s got the quick bursts to be an effective driver, and can knock down the outside shot at a good enough rate, but he’s a pass-first guard, and he’s been quite impressive with his pinpoint accuracy on passes of all kinds.

Cummins is a quick, two-way point guard who came up from Utah to join Mode Prep. He’s been an excellent ball defender who doesn’t take plays off, fights through screens, gets good contests on jumpers, and denies face cuts. Offensivley, he’s displayed great change of speeds, an ability to handle pressure, and then create by attacking gaps. He’s a spark plug type player with his effort defensively, and his quickness allows him to have an impact on both ends.

Cummins put his offensive skills on display against LV Orange. He used a variety of moves to get past his guy, and finished a number of contested lay-ups. Cummins also connected two 3-pointers. The other thing I liked about his game, was the way he competed. He played with great effort on defense.

Cummins will be must watch basketball this season. His combination of wiggle, IQ and athleticism make him a prime candidate for scoring leader. He can play without the ball, getting open off screens, or he’s comfortable going either direction with the bounce, to set up shots for himself.

Key Area Of Improvement: R&J athleticism
I don’t want to make much out of one play, but Cummins transition, in traffic throw down during the GV Christian Summer League, kind of punctuated his athletic improvement. He’s one of the best shooters, and passers in the state, when you combine his R&J improvement, look out.

Good day one for Cummins, as he stakes early claim for 2A Player of the year. It was not his best shooting day, however he showed a ton of skill and toughness. His ability to get to the rim and finish with his off hand was as impressive, but his willingness to mix it up for tough in traffic rebounds showed an underrated toughness. He also had the play of the day, floating to the rim for a head tapping dunk.

Lake Mead is a participant, which means an opportunity to see one of the top guards in 2A. Cummins grades out at above average passer, shooter, and handler, looking forward to evaluating which skill stands out the most against what’s stacking up to be some stiff competition.

One of the highest skilled guards in the class, Cummins showed two valuable skills this weekend. He was good in catch and shoot, finding a home in the corner to quickly get his shot off. He also showed a ton of leadership, organizing the offense, getting good looks for teammates during the game I watched.
