Expert Analysis
Jay Frye | Prep Hoops Scout
Marcus is a knockdown shooter with combo guard versatility, giving coaches a trusted weapon in both primary and secondary roles. He’s lethal off the catch, quick on his release, and capable of creating clean looks with footwork and timing. He defends with purpose and reads the game well on both ends, rarely overextending. Coaches keep calling because shooters who can also handle, pass, and guard are in short supply. He fits as a modern combo guard who stretches the floor and competes.

Any time I get the opportunity to see Marcus play, I try and make it happen. He’s one of the more impressive guards I’ve seen in the past year and he’s not slowing down by any means. He’s lightning quick and has one of the fastest first steps in the state, making it nearly impossible to stay in front of him at all times. He’s physical and fierce on the drive, often using his body in a clever way to protect his shot and get a foul simultaneously. He’s a monster on the glass on both ends of the floor and he’s constantly moving and making positive contributions for his squad. He has boatloads of energy, because he’s just as effective on the defensive side of the ball – stays in front of his man, picks the rock from his assignment without fouling, and reads plays as they’re happening so he can pounce and create turnovers for his team. It’s hard to believe Zelee is only a Junior this year, but that gives him more time to become even more dangerous. I have no doubt he will.

‘s athleticism was truly exceptional, often leaving opponents in disbelief, particularly on the defensive end. His explosiveness was on full display when he soared across the lane to swat what seemed like an easy layup attempt, turning it into a fast break for his team. Shortly after, he executed a chase-down block, sending the ball flying out of bounds with authority. Every movement Zelee made was at top speed, from his defensive rotations to his transition play, making him a constant disruptive force on the court. His fast-paced, high-energy style of play made him a game-changer defensively.

He’s a reliable scorer from all areas of the court, using his size to finish at the rim and his shooting touch to stretch defenses. Zelee is also a capable ball-handler who can create his own shot or set up his teammates when the defense collapses. Marcus was the motor for Hoops EYBL in their big time win over DEYO on Saturday afternoon. He was the point guard they needed as he kept the engine running and was in charge of setting the pace on offense. He had several plays where he blew past his defender to the basket and would finish over the contact, as well as some outstanding drive and dish plays where he would pass to a wide open teammate in the corner for an easy shot. This is my second time getting to watch Marcus and I have been impressed by his speed and agility on both ends as well as his fundamental aggressive defense. It is easy to tell that he is one of the leaders on this squad and will continue to be one of the most vocal on the court.

If you’re looking for a player that can put on a show while filling up the stat sheet – look no further than Zelee. He’s not scared of anyone out on the court and for good reason – his talent often stands above the rest and he knows it and smartly uses that to his advantage. With his elite speed and ballhandling abilities, he regularly gives his defenders that “deer in the headlights” look, most just can’t keep up. He’s got an impressive jumper from mid-range and three and if you’re not careful defending in the paint, he will take any and every opportunity he gets to posterize you. I love that Marcus doesn’t take his skills for granted. He could skate by on natural talent and scoring points – but he chooses not to. When he’s in the game, he’s going full speed every second. His hustle and heart show his love for the game and both serve to round out his significant impact very nicely.
