About Makai

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

High basketball IQ, versatile Guard with great ball handling ability, shooting ability, court vision and willingness to pass while creating open looks for my team mates. I am also a great defender, usually tasked with guarding the opponent's best player which sometimes means playing point guard on offense and defending the opponent's center in defense.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I've been told by various coaches that I have the highest basketball IQ they've seen at my age. My mentality is to take no plays off until the whistle is blown. I thrive in a leadership role because I can contribute while also helping to get my team involved through heavy communication on both ends of the floor. I take pride in lifting up team mates whether through encouraging words or assists.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I participate in many different community activities, I'm active at Church, I participate in community groups such as "Campus Life" which is an uplifting group for high school teens. I have almost always been a "straight A" student, gaining me many academic awards throughout the years

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I have learned to be a leader on and off the court, striving to always be an example to others through behavior and participation in school and in the community. I also enjoy volunteering as a camp leader when our school does basketball camps for youth in the community, along with working at our fundraisers such community golf outings, car washes, concessions, etc.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I've had an uncle as a club team/middle school/freshmen coach, along with my grandfather as the varsity coach, we have to go above/beyond to show that I don't receive special treatment. That means not moving up early with others in my class(freshmen 9th grade, JV 10th grade, then varsity), along with criticism from players/parents although I'm always training/working harder to earn/keep my spot

What type of college are you looking for?

I'm interested in a college that will help me advance academically, learning what I need to know for future career opportunities. I would also hope that the same college is able help me advance athletically, improving my skill set, preparing me/teaching me more skills required to play at the college level. I'm looking for a college that sees my value academically, athletically, and personally.
