While it came largely with the score bordering on out of hand at times, Pochkhua did more than enough in an 18-point second half on Sunday to warrant mention here a prospect worth tracking. A skilled big new to the U.S. from the eastern European nation of Georgia, he used his strong frame to establish leverage both in the post and attacking off the bounce out of faceups, warding off his man for tough finishes inside or drawing contact and converting efficiently at the foul line. He also showed admirable competitive fire, competing to the final whistle despite a lopsided margin. The European influence and FIBA experience is easy to see in Pochkhua’s processing ability and offensive versatility. He’ll have to work to establish a more clear defensive role in the long run, as he’s a bit undersized as a rim protector and slow of foot guarding on the perimeter, but his blend of size, skill, and toughness put him at least on a likely path to a scholarship when the time comes.
