I had heard about Watkins this winter from his dominance in Maine high school hoops as a freshman, but yesterday was the first time I saw him in person… he lives up to the hype. He’s a total blur in transition and does an amazing job elevating at the rim (even with very minimal lead up time), so he’s quite an effective finisher at the hoop—he had multiple rim-rocking dunks and a host of other impressive finesse finishes. Watkins can also make mid range jumpers and is a phenomenal rebounder for his size, even when playing up against older players (and having not reclassed yet). It’s too early to predict where he’ll end up, but he should certainly have scholarship hopes at this point.

Watkins, a freshman out of Cheverus, didn’t disappoint upon making his long-awaited debut at the high school level. The 6’3″ wing is a terrific athlete that plays with a high two-way motor, which is part of how we was able to become a nightly 20-20 threat. A big time competitor, his ability to finish with athleticism and through contact around the rim, while also developing his perimeter jumper, made him one of the state’s toughest covers. You could also argue that their was no one better in transition and no one opposing defenses wanted to see less getting downhill with the ball in their hands.

Watkins, a wing out of Cheverus High School in Maine, is the #2 ranked small forward and checks in at #6 overall. The 6’3″ wing is coming off of an impressive 24 point and 21 rebound outing, showcasing what has made him a standout this winter in the MPA. A high level athlete with great length and a solid frame, he’s a handful in the open floor, particularly with the ball in his hands. His energy as a two-way rebounder is notable, as is his willingness to work on the defensive end of the floor. As he continues to develop his skill from the perimeter, his ceiling as a prospect will only grow, making him one of the most intriguing long-term prospects in the region from the Class of 2029.
