Here is a player who has just has a tremendous senior year. He claimed his league’s MVP and rightfully so. He elevated his game in many ways, being able to score smoother from all 3 levels and still being a dog on the defensive side of the ball. He is a player who can consistently get double doubles, as he stays aggressive on the boards. He is incredibly underrated from a recruiting stand point, D1/D2 schools should be all over him.

Simmons had to grind this weekend, playing physical inside and also dealing with some foul trouble against O’Dea. But he showed some good grit to continue to battle, was a tenacious rebounder on both ends and stayed with the play to grab his own misses inside and go back up. He also showed his defensive versatility, guarding a vast array of players from lengthy bigs to quick guards.

Simmons thrives at getting downhill and did a lot of work around at the rim against River Ridge last Friday. He can get to the rim in a number of ways, attacking lanes with big bursts, playing off two to get around defenders in the paint, and running the floor with his eyes on the rim. He mixed in power finishes with some touch shots near the hoop and has also been a big presence on the glass to start the year, averaging 16.8 points and 8.0 rebounds a game, including three games with 10+ rebounds.

He’s a two-way force who has really found his groove to end the summer and into the fall. Timberline loses some key guys from last year’s team (Darrell Gipson &

) which means Simmons will bear the burden of playmaking and rebounding for this year’s team, as well as continuing to be a lockdown defender. If he can continue to score efficiently around the paint and expand his offensive profile by knocking down open outside shots, he could make a case to be recognized among the best seniors in the 3A.

Had one of the top two-way performances of the event, defending inside and out at a high level while playing strong on the other end with downhill drives and keeping the defense honest with some threes. Was very efficient around the paint and played with controlled aggression to get to good spots and finish. Didn’t force shots up but was ready to challenge his defender on each catch.

An early standout on both ends who showed the defensive ability to stifle a wide range of offensive players. Moved his feet well, showed quick hands to get strips, and was super effective getting downhill, then turning back with a quick pivot to knock down short jumpers.

Kenyon is a big guard who knows how to utilize his strength on the court. He is physical on both sides of the ball, fighting through screens and always boxing out opposing players in the paint. He attacks the ball well with both hands, taking care of the ball and having a soft touch around the rim. His athleticism is eye opening every time I see him play live. When I say he can jump out of the gym, I mean it. He’s set up for a big summer and even bigger senior year next year.

He didn’t have the prettiest game against Kelso in the opening round of their bi-district tournament, but his team was in it right until the end and Simmons displayed a gritty resolve to keep competing. Simmons didn’t really get going offensively until the second half but still ended the game as their leading scorer with 16 points. He got a lot more aggressive in the third quarter, working into the paint with nice change of pace and direction to prod and twist for open short range looks. He was really effective with his pivot and getting defenders falling back or off their feet, then mixed in some hard drives from the perimeter, utilizing strong rips to get through defenders and finish the plays off with some high finishes over the top of contests. Simmons’ next game is a winner-to-state matchup with a familiar league opponent, Gig Harbor.

Simmons is a high-level defender that can defend every square foot of the floor. In their first game of the season he defended big wings, strong posts, and quick guards, showing he has the kind of defensive versatility that makes him a weapon each and every game. He’s strong enough to absorb contact to the chest, moves his feet well, and has great hands to block shots or strip the ball away. Even though he had some offensive struggles in this game he came away with big defensive possessions that kept the game close.
