Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
Tying with a team-high with 14 points, Portee was active on both ends of the floor with a gutsy effort despite the season-ending loss. The junior swingman was aggressive looking to push the ball in transition and attack in the halfcourt as the game went on, showing some polish to his ball skills with quick bursts to the rim when he saw a seam open up. He was quick to loose balls and active with his hands on D while flashing the ability to space the floor to the perimeter with his feet set. Portee also intrigued with a handful of slick passing reads to hit his big man coming off of pick-and-roll action. He’s not the most conventional player but his ability to check a multitude of boxes with a team-friendly approach should attract scholarship-level attention over the next year.

Leading the way for the Crusaders as he’s done throughout the season, Portee put together a workmanlike 15-point effort while coming up just short of the win. He thrived as an efficient and opportunistic off-ball scorer, showing a quick release as a shooter off the catch and consistent activity as a cutter to find easy buckets. The junior swingman made scrappy contributions across the floor game, particularly as a rebounder, and shows promising flashes off the bounce as an athletic straight-line slasher and occasional 1-on-1 shot creator. He should be on the radar of scholarship-level programs before too long with his versatile two-way impact.

Portee is a utility guard who impresses with his versatility. He can play on or off the basketball and has a nose for finding ways to stay relevant in the game. I like how he is able to anticipate the game on the fly and always seems to find ways to collect steals on defense. I want to see him become more of a consistent threat from deep.

After spending his first two years at Trinity, Portee Jr. will spend the next two at Bishop McDevitt, where he should have the ball in his hands a lot. He is a very shifty guard who can score from all three levels. Kenyon is extremely crafty finishing at the basket. He also has a great back-to-the-basket game, where he can either rip quick to the rim or turn around into a smooth jumper. It will be fun to see Portee as a more polished player with a program who trusts him to handle the ball.

Portee was a walking bucket at Philly HS Live as he torched a tough Pennsbury squad for 27 points (3 threes). This fast and elusive guard scored at every level in the half-court. He was unstoppable off the dribble and Portee proved that once got to the rim, he could finish strong through contact or with a creative flair. If a defender sagged off, Portee drained the open three. Portee was a blur in transition too. He raced past opposing players and then glided in for lay-ins or pulled up at the arc and then drained transition threes. His ability to play at full speed without being out of control or committing a turnover was incredibly impressive.

Portee is an in-between guard who is mostly playing off the ball for his CPE squad. He is very adaptable is does whatever is needed to help the good of the team. He doesn’t mind sacrificing his body on the defensive end. Portee was able to turn defense to offense. He does a good job of filling the lane in transition. Portee showed that he can play around the rim. He takes high percentage shots. I would like to see Portee become more consistent from three he has a tad of a hitch in his shot. He is primed for a big junior campaign.

Portee was aggressive as a facilitator who propelled himself into the paint with ease in the half-court. He has a long wiry frame which allows him to be disruptive on defense. He showed flashes on the offensive end as a scorer. I think Portee is starting to slowly scratch the surface as a prospect and it wouldn’t surprise me if he looked like a different player in the next several months.

Portee Jr is tough to defend when he has a full head of steam. If he gets a clean rip through from the corner, the baseline is his runway for a finish above the rim or a mid-range pull-up. Without having to gamble, Portee Jr makes plays on the ball as a defender. He can contain whoever he’s guarding and deflect the ball away with his long arms or flip his hips and recover when he gets beat.
