No. 37 – No. 25
We’ve seen JJ take his game up a level this season. Massaquoi has demonstrated that he can run the offense for the team efficiently from different places on the floor. The Tentley Tigers are a dangerous team when they get going behind JJ and his paint prowess. His playmaking has been the most impressive facet to his game this year in my opinion. Josiah makes efficient reads from the post and the perimeter that opens up so much for the offense. His perimeter game impresses with the various ways he’s able to get to the rim off the dribble. He can blow-by the defender at times off the first step, or make a couple moves and drive with either hand. Improved jumpshooter from beyond and has been a consistent factor shooting from the midrange. Massaquoi has drawn some tough assignments defensively and held his own against some premier bigs. Very impressed with Josiah’s production in his final year.

JJ continues to improve his efficiency each game out. In this game vs Bullis he dominated offensively in the second half. Went to work in the post, reading the defense while backing down the defender and dishing out dimes to open teammates. He also showed tremendous footwork in the post, making some nice moves to score in close. Spun off the post well and slashed the lane very effectively without forcing shots. Made a fair share of 3pt shots to vary his offensive attack. But even more impressive was the defensive versatility Massaquoi put forth, battling

down low for the majority of the night. He had many times where he outmuscled the big and stood his ground defensively and on the glass. Had a statement dunk over the 7-footer to help finish a 2-point win over the formidable Bullis School.

Massaquoi had a very nice showing in both his performances. I really liked watching the way he used his offensive prowess to create advantages for his team. He would get the ball and get himself into scoring position, make a read and hit the right teammate to either finish or set up the next pass for the basket (hockey assist). Did this time and time again each game, both from the post and from the perimeter. Playmaking and decision making was on full display for the senior anomaly, who guarded the opponents biggest player while still maintaining control of the offense on the other end. He scored when it was necessary, didn’t have to force shots because he opened up the floor for his teammates early. He was able to conduct his normal offensive damage to the opposition once the game called for his scoring, bodying smaller defenders and finishing strong at the basket through contact. Another stock-rising showing from the uncommitted combo.

The undersized big showcased his inside-outside game, scoring 21 points and grabbing four rebounds. Massaquoi connected on his lone three-point attempt (corner 3), hit a pullup jumper and finished at the rim with both power and finish.

-Massaquoi has an intriguing blend of skills that give him some positional versatility at both ends of the floor–contributing as a guard, wing, and small ball 4 for Jackson Reed. Massaquoi will mix in a poster dunk to remind you that he can get off the ground but he can also muscle his way to the rim past defenders and score off of putbacks around the basket. If he can prove that he can be a knockdown C+S threat from the perimeter and ratchet up the motor to consistently be one of the most disruptive defenders in the area– all of the college interest he’s seeking will come to fruition. With Fort leaving HS to enroll at Georgetown early, Massaquoi will need to excel in a bigger role as a scorer and leader for this JR team to continue its recent run of success.

Massaquoi’s ability to fill the stat sheet and affect the game from multiple levels is always evident when he is playing with a motor. Saw good flashes from him today as a versatile defender, physical driver, and athletic wing that can mix in C+S 3-point shooting while also blocking your big’s shot above the rim. Would like to see his footspeed quicken to defend guards on the perimeter while seeing more consistency with his shooting and defensive/rebounding intensity.

-Massaquoi’s inside-out ability is starting to show more signs of development on the perimeter as he knocked down both of his 3-point attempts and has improved his handle. His lateral quickness needs to improve in order to play the 2-guard role or be a college wing, but right now he fits well as an undersized forward that can defend, rebound, bully his matchup to the rim, and hit some perimeter shots. The athleticism and vert have improved, with that explosiveness lending himself a more improved ability to switch on the perimeter and grab rebounds in traffic.

While Jackson-Reed ultimately went down in defeat, it was Massaquoi who kept them in striking distance in the second quarter. He had 8 of his 13 points in that frame and competed hard on the defensive end. It will be interesting to see how this Spring plays out for him.
