Expert Analysis
Donald Tatum | Prep Hoops Scout
Spann has crept under the radar for three years, but is poised for a breakout year with the Panthers. He’s carried his to team three consecutive top 28 bids, but has get to bring home the crown. His ability to get to the basket is unguardable and he is an tenacious defender. He is the type of player that will have every stat box checked. Prep’s title hopes lie on the back of Spann because they will only go as far as he will take them. Player Comparison: Miles Bridges. Grissom Pick #12.

Joseph Spann was undoubtedly the most exceptional defensive guard I had the privilege of witnessing throughout the entire Prep Hoops Circuit Season. His on-ball pressure, evident in the tournaments I observed him play in, compelled opposing ball handlers to make hasty and incorrect decisions. Beyond his defensive prowess, Joseph showcased his hustle and made consistent big plays. While excelling defensively, he also demonstrated his ability to score effectively at all levels. Notably, on O.W.E 17U, he demonstrated his adaptability by playing different roles, contributing to the team’s success.
What’s Next for Joseph?
At Lincoln Prep, Joseph has garnered accolades from being named to the first-team all-district and all-state teams. As a junior, he also achieved the remarkable feat of scoring 1,000 points, averaging an impressive 19.8 points per game. Beyond his scoring ability, Joseph’s defensive prowess is a significant asset that will undoubtedly translate to the next level of competition. Standing at 6 feet tall, he possesses the strong frame of a college guard. Keep an eye out for Joseph to be offered soon by college programs!

Trey Spann epitomized what it means to be a “glue guy”, bringing value in every aspect of the game through relentless effort and versatile execution. Offensively, Spann impacted the game in subtle but meaningful ways, spacing the floor, creating off the bounce, and setting off-ball screens that generated multiple scoring actions. Defensively, he flew around with urgency, closing out with discipline, rotating on time, and showing team-first anticipation in help situations. If he wasn’t sprinting in transition, he was diving for a loose ball. If he wasn’t defending the point of attack, he was tagging the roller or switching onto a mismatch. Spann’s energy, IQ, and two-way versatility give him immense upside as a perimeter stopper and utility wing.

Joseph Spann is a physical guard defensively that doesn’t give opposing players enough room to operate. He really gave opposing guards a difficult time all weekend making them uncomfortable while handling the ball with his aggressive ball pressure. Also, Joseph is willing to make the extra effort to make hustle plays for his team on both ends of the floor keeping possessions alive on offense or securing defensive stops. On the offensive end he wasn’t asked to carry the load, but Joseph is very capable of scoring on all three levels when needed. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Joseph’s name on college radars as time goes by.

Spann has truly earned his stripes, and his game has come full circle. A true Swiss Army knife on the court, he can do it all. His three-point shot is nearly automatic, and his ability to score in the mid-range makes him an even greater offensive threat. When he’s not lighting it up offensively, Spann is just as dominant on defense, making his presence felt on both ends of the floor. Spann poured in 17 points in a tough loss vs Southern Lab.

Spann put his offensive skill set on full display, dropping 30 points in his second game, going head-to-head with a top-12 ranked player in his class. He was lights out from beyond the arc, drained mid-range jumpers with precision, and finished at the rim with ease. Spann is a hidden gem in the class of 2026, largely due to the efficiency and simplicity in his game. He maximizes every possession, often taking minimal dribbles to create space. As an elite catch-and-shoot threat, he seamlessly moves into the triple-threat position, consistently finding his sweet spots in the mid-range. His game is defined by its simplicity and efficiency, but don’t mistake that for limitation—Spann is versatile. When paired with a scoring teammate, he’s more than comfortable playing a complementary role, yet he can effortlessly switch gears and score in bunches when called upon. His ability to adapt and contribute without dominating the ball makes him a complex, high-impact player. Spann was featured in the recent Prep Hoops Small School article. He showed up to play with big name players and showed that he can is definitely one to watch.

Joseph “Tre” Spann is an interesting player due to his ability to cover all the bases for a college basketball player. He has the size, athleticism, offensive skill, defensive skill as well as basketball personality to fit on a lot of teams at the next level. His ability to shoot the three ball is elite, but even more impressive is his defensive enthusiasm. He has a solemn basketball demeanor and excels under pressure. I expect a breakout season from the Lincoln Prep Junior. I look forward to watching him in the upcoming showcase around notable big school players to see which part of his game shines the most. He is a 6’2 athletic combo guard that will definitely be one to watch over the next two years.
