About Joseph
Expert Analysis
Max Wagner | Prep Hoops Scout
Joseph was one of the most aggressive slashers I saw over the weekend. If he saw a gap to get to the rim, he was going to hit it hard and likely come away with two points. At 6’4 he has a long frame, a quick first step, and some explosive athleticism that allows him to glide to the rack and finish against size. Even when he wasn’t able to finish, he did a nice job of drawing contact which led to easy points at the lane. Just goes out and plays hard every possession for his Minnesota Comets Kuhl team.

WHY?
Joe was a game-changer this past weekend. He was scoring at all 3 levels, including one massive highlight reel dunk over 3 defenders for an AND1! Joe also hit a running 3 at the buzzer at the end of regulation to send the 3rd game to overtime. The Comets ultimately lost in triple OT, but Joe made many clutch plays throughout the weekend. But, more impressively, Couwenhoven has really started to improve his decision-making and IQ. The Comets are seeing more and more instances of Joe getting a paint touch, drawing defense, and making the right basketball play, and Joe has also embraced the notion of making the simple play and allowing the ball to come back to him in a better scoring opportunity. His growth is intriguing. A really bright future is ahead as college coaches are now taking notice!

Joe is leading MN Comets Kuhl in scoring this season. Couwenhoven has impressive length and athleticism as a scoring wing. I watched him live in Sioux Falls and this kid can make highlight-reel plays. When Joe trusts his teammates and plays within himself, he can really produce at an efficient level. This is his first year playing spring/summer ball and has shown a ton of raw ability. Once his game becomes refined and developed, Joe could be a dude. He has serious potential and high upside.
