Among the few first team all-state returners from the 3A level, Gonzales is about all you can ask for from the lead guard position. Although undersized, he has not made that an issue to his production, as a notable opponent on everyones’ scouting report this past season. Adept at leveraging his quick change of pace with the ball, his unpredictable tendencies played a role in his lofty production last season. His improvements behind the arc through this upcoming season will be fascinating to follow, given his high volume opportunities with state title runner up, Robertson.

Gonzales is a twitchy guard who makes the most of his opportunities at roughly 5’5. With the ball on a string going either direction, defenses are rarely allowed to be proactive versus the guard. Typically getting to his array of opportunities out of ball screens or off-ball movement, he rarely has opportunities to find easy offense. His efficiency inside the arc was impressive to say the least, up at 61% on those field goal attempts. Part of what allows him to be so productive is his quick instincts, effectively making the extra pass when necessary, even through tight windows. At 3.8 assists per game, Gonzales provided ample shotmaking opportunities for teammates, making him one of the most productive facilitators at the 3A level.

Gonzales brings value through his pick and roll playmaking, excellent at patiently awaiting the screener. His tight handle allows him to operate in tight spaces, active changing speeds to get his defender in a bad position. The current leader among 3A 2025s in assists and free throws, just great at getting into the paint, but equally valuable contributing for himself or setting up teammates with easy shots. Although undersized, he competes on the defensive end, quick to take away space from help or at the point of attack. His low center of gravity makes him especially quick laterally, more than capable of walling off a wide variety of backcourt while landing in the top-5 for points per game, Gonzales is a dependable lead guard.

Gonzales has helped Robertson get into the state finals last year, among the leaders in points per game in 3A basketball. The guard will return as a key facilitator with Robertson, coming back as this group’s leader in points and assists per game. Following averages of 13.2 points and 2.3 assists per game. Gonzales did particularly well through his patience making plays, seeking out great looks for teammates over good looks for himself. Robertson should remain one of the top programs in 3A basketball, boasting quite a few high IQ players stepping into third and fourth years in the program.
