Expert Analysis
Tom Keller | Prep Hoops Scout
Johnson is an energetic guard who shows the ability to play on or off the basketball. He has a nice package of finishes he uses them around the bucket. Johnson excels breaking the game down in the half-court and taking what the defense gives him. I thought early on in the game he was over dribbling too much but once he reeled it back, the game started to come to him organically. His offense output always allows for his team to be in games. He made a few trips the charity stripe.

+43 (#90 to #47)
Johnson, a guard out of the Williston Northampton School in Massachusetts, jumped 43 spots in this update and now sits at #47 overall in the rankings. Now firmly on the Division I radar, the 6’5″ combo guard has terrific positional size and length, both of which he uses to his advantage as a disruptive on-ball defender. He moves his feet to stay in front of the ball and uses his length to create turnovers in passing lanes. Offensively, he’s got some creativity off the bounce, is a good finisher around the rim with his length, and continues to improve the consistency of his perimeter jumper. He’ll run on the travel circuit with the Philly Pride.

The only currently-ranked prospect among this list, Johnson Jr. made his case for a notable northward bump as he continues to acclimate to his new surroundings in New England. A Lancaster native and La Academia (PA) transfer, Johnson delivered 15 points in Williston’s only game of the weekend, showcasing his natural scoring ability and standout positional size. Johnson was effective both creating his own shot in 1-on-1 situations and striking opportunistically within the flow either off the catch or getting out in transition. He looks increasingly comfortable with the style of play and increased level of talent alongside him relative to his previous stop. Johnson continues to trend up as a prospect worthy of at least mid-major attention, while showing sprinkles of high-major flashes if his body can catch up to his overall talent level.

Johnson impressed with his versatility on either end of the floor. He scored the ball in a plethora of ways. He did a nice job slashing off the basketball. Johnson showed he can score the ball from behind the arc. It looks like Johnson might have grown an inch in height since the summer. His length allows him to gather steals on defense. He connected with teammates on a few occasions for scoring chances of their own. Johnson had 10 points. He is a prospect who should see a ton of attention at the mid major and low major level.

Johnson, a prospect out of the Williston Northampton School, checks in at #104 overall and #22 among the combo guards. Johnson is a high level athlete with great measurables and the ability to create space off the bounce. He’s got a quick first step, shows the ability to make tough shots in isolation situations, and can really knock down shots from behind the arc. He’s an electric finisher around the rim and shows some good vision as a driver. Defensively, his length is an asset as he makes tons of plays on the ball and in passing lanes, proving to be super disruptive on that end of the floor.

JJ Johnson comes from Pennsylvania to The Williston Northampton School and should be an immediate impact player at this level. The 6-foot-4 guard is incredibly lanky and wiry and uses his body to get to spots on the floor and elevate for Mikal Bridges-esque mid rangers (if you know, you know). He has no offensive weaknesses; he can play in the pick and roll with great composure and change of speed, but he can also explosively get to the rim and finish. He looks like he might not be done growing and putting on muscle, too, which is even more intriguing. Definite scholarship prospect who should have a huge year.

The talent has long been obvious with Johnson, a drippingly long combo guard with as deep an offensive arsenal as you’ll find in the state. Finally starting to settle into his body after stretching out quickly in the past couple years, he’s shown signs of putting all the pieces together with some explosive two-way performances during Team Final Red ‘s strong start to the spring. Looking like one of the best prospects on the EYCL circuit, Johnson has been aggressive but efficient while mostly letting things come to him and keeping his eyes up to make reads for his teammates. It’s no wonder why mid-majors have begun to turn up the heat with the Lancaster native while high-majors begin to sniff around.
