rn-Sykes struggled to make an impact early but made several HUGE plays in the 2H that led to Spalding roaring their way back into the game. Once the senior PG settled into the game, he got himself going with a bullet pass to a big for an easy bucket under the rim while standing above the volleyball line. Sykes then hit a really tough reverse layup in traffic after blowing by his matchup, then hit a huge go-ahead 3-pointer from the wing to put the Cavs ahead late in the 4Q. His play-making, scrappy defense, and paint touches often led to runs for the Cavaliers during the regular season so it was no surprise to see the same in the title game.

If Spalding goes on a run fueled by forcing turnovers and getting out in transition, Sykes is usually at the epicenter of it. The physical southpaw takes pride in cutting off driving lanes and forcing his matchup to flip his hips and attack the other direction without losing the ball. He rebounds incredibly well for his size–especially at the offensive end– and isn’t afraid to seek out contact on drives that gets him to the line.

Sykes showed his ability to anticipate passes and drives to the line by coming up with 3 steals in this one to atone for an early turnover that led to a JC bucket. The physical point guard gets to his spots and did a great job of creating easy looks for his teammates, although all but one missed the shot in this game. He also scored on acrobatic extension layups at the rim to spark a run for Spalding in the 1Q and finished through the contact to finish another in the 2Q. His energy and defensive intensity are infectious and his teammates feed off that whenever they go on runs ignited by fullcourt pressure. The available 2024 PG finished with 11p 2r 3s 1a.
