Expert Analysis

Garrett has a lot of variety to his game, but he really shined when operating out of the high post. Along with cutting to the rim as a dynamic finisher in the halfcourt. One of the longest wingspans in the state make him a fantastic finisher. With acrobatic moves to avoid defenders or throw it down with authority like the oop he caught in the second half. Can set up defenders on extended post up and explode to the rim, or work the mid-range like an old school wing. Loved the spots Memorial put him in to score on Saturday, and loved the efficiency he scored with in the second half even more.

A mercurial talent for the Chargers, there’s a play of two every game that will leave even the seasoned basketball observer going “wow”. He’s a wing by build, but there’s moments on the ball where his combination of quickness and control has him looking like a point guard. When locked in, he can smoothly pull up from three, drop a no look dime, or glide to the rim. Consistency is what’s needed to unlock his true potential. And there’s no better time than now for a tradition rich program that’s competing for a 5A State Title.

There’s a handful of plays each game that will make an observe go “wow”. He’s a wing, who often moves like a guard with the way he can blow by defenders and his body control on drives. Does a good job of also looking to pass on those drives. The potential remains off the charts for the 918 junior. His season has been a bit up and down, but he appears to be turning a corner in this second semester. Which is crucial for his own development and Memorial’s ceiling.

Most of the first quarter was a disaster for the Chargers, but it ended with a nice stepback three from Garrett. It was the first of a couple impressive off the dribble threes for a player of his size and build. There’s times he can still be casual with the ball, but the progress and upside remain very evident.
Eats up ground in a hurry on drives and in transition, with a gliding style that allows him to slip through gaps in the defense. Had a couple times where he got a mismatch on the block and went to work with post ups. Garrett finished with an efficient 19 points as he looks set to take his game to the next level as a junior.

There were sophomore growing pains for Garrett, but the upside was evident. That has led to a productive spring for Garrett, with it becoming clear that he has the potential to play on the ball. Which it seems like he’ll get ample opportunities to do for Memorial. The first half against Holland Hall was a good example of his scoring ceiling, earning trips to the line and even hitting jumpers off the dribble. Consistency will be a key theme to watch for Garrett and his Chargers as they attempt to reach their lofty ceiling.

Garrett was up and down during his first year of varsity action at 918 powerhouse Memorial. The highs were very high and hinted at the crazy high ceiling of the prospect. While he currently has the build of a wing, especially with his long wingspan, there’s on the ball potential. Which he is getting the chance to work on this spring and summer. As an on the ball defender, his combination of wingspan and foot speed allows to hound lead ball handlers. With a gliding type movement profile, he’s very capable of pressuring the rim in halfcourt and pushing it in transition. There’s moments where his athleticism is coming in and he’s capable of delivering highlight reel finishing above the rim. Add in some unselfish and good vision, especially in transition, and he profiles as a potential bigger lead guard. If he puts the work in.

At first glance, Garrett would come off as a disruptive wing defender and hustle player. But he’s actually sneaky capable on the ball, as a drive and creator for his teammates. He’s has a gliding driving style that often allows him to play at his own pace with drives, that either absorb contact or avoid it at the rim. There’s flashes of big time athleticism, a recent two handed monstrous slam in transition is proof of that. He’s still finding his footing at the variety level, but his athletic profile and style of play does seem to fit in the middle of player profiles of a couple names from the past at Tulsa Memorial. Garrett compares favorable to a mixture of Brayshawn Finch (2020) and Keylan Boone (2019). Both were athletic wings with defensive calling cards, but were sneaky in their abilities on the ball. Of course, Boone also shot it very well at the high school level, and it remains to be seen if Garrett can match that.

Garrett didn’t get the start, but he logged big minutes for the Chargers. And it was easy to see why, as the lanky sophomore plays with toughness and aggressiveness. He has a sneaky good handle for a young wing, as he was one of the more effective Chargers at actually getting downhill and pressuring the Dutch’s tough defense. While he did convert a few of his drives, he did struggle with the physicality at times. But to his credit, he never backed down.
Garrett is young and raw, but has the physical traits to be a high upside player and will need to be monitored more going forward.
