Gavin has been one of the more dependable two-way guards this season. His value truly shows in the way he impacts the game’s flow. Offensively he’s been smooth getting to his spots, finishing around the rim, and showing touch with floaters when defenses cut off the lane. The biggest plus with Gavin is his decision-making, because he consistently makes the right play and does a great job dissecting defenses with the dribble or the pass. On the defensive end, he’s been a tough matchup with tough on-ball pressure, discipline, and physicality that leads to winning possessions. Through the first half of the season, Gavin has proven he can do a little bit of everything, and his presence is felt all over.

-Came away impressed with Johnson’s development as a scoring PG that got off to a hot start in the 1H. Johnson scored a quick 15 points in the first half by pushing the pace in transition and taking advantage of driving lanes in the halfcourt– which was encouraging on a night where the typical perimeter shots weren’t falling. Johnson used that scoring gravity from the 1H to really lock in on creating for his teammates in the 2H with 5 2H assists, finding shooters on the perimeter and bigs on the block with relative ease. His scoring and perimeter shooting prowess continues to keep his team in games against non-conference opponents and win games against in-conference matchups. Think that there is a decent chance that he plays his way into a scholarship if he keeps up the play-making, as that duality raises his projected floor.

Gavin was instrumental in his attack this weekend offensively. His jumpshot and range remained consistent throughout the weekend. He really looked the part of a lead guard manning the bulk of the offense. Gavin was effective both on and off of the ball alongside backcourt mate J. Hall. I was impressed with his versatility and effectiveness on both sides of the ball. Slashed to the rack hard off the dribble when he wasn’t left open to shoot. Always amongst the team’s top scorers by the end of each game. Very productive weekend for Gavin game in and game out.

-Making strong decisions with the ball in his hands, always seems to be scoring efficiently regardless of the environment that I see him in because he’s a confident but unselfish shooter. Johnson can thrive both on or off the ball as a guard that can get his own within the flow of the game. Love his understanding of pace, when he needs to really push it in transition and when he needs to let teammates flow to the corners and fill the wings to get a good shot. The marriage of high efficiency shooting from the field whether he is shooting at a high or low volume makes him a valuable prospect to track as he heads into his senior year as the undisputed head of the snake for STM.

Gavin isn’t the biggest guy, but his feel for the game helps make up for that. Gavin finished with 19 in a loss against Westfield. 

Poised, smart floor leader possesses a strong basketball IQ…Knows how to play the game and has a good understanding for running a team effectively. Gavin brings good court vision and knows how to use his skills and passing ability to combat the speed and agility of other highly athletic players and showed the ability to score if needed.
