Gabe Hudgens
About Gabe
Expert Analysis
Van Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
Gabriel offers a very steady, scrappy presence on both ends of the floor for the Rough Riders. Hudgens is a nice complementary guard with a high motor and the ability to make plays with or without the ball in his hands. He touched the paint, knocked down open jumpers, and outworked opponents to make hustle plays. Gabriel is an active defender and willing passer leading the Rough Riders with 14 points in the quarterfinal game against Banneker.

Quick, playmaking guard who puts pressure on opponents with his ability to create paint touches. Excels on the open court. Capable perimeter shot maker…Legit shot making ability out to 19 feet. Really encouraging showing for 6’0 Hudgens throughout the season. His game has really approved into a patient leader showing the games is starting to slow down. Confidence is increasing. Showcasing twitch, vision, and craftiness as a creator. Getting where he wants off the bounce & scoring or setting up others. Averaging 13 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block a game.

Gabe impacted the game as a true playmaker, using his paint touches to create clean offense against the zone. He consistently drove inside and kicked out to shooters, then followed it up with a backcourt steal that led to a reverse layup. His passing really popped, including a perfect corner feed that broke the zone defense for an easy basket. He also threw a full-court dime to a cutter for another layup, showing high-level court vision. Gabe made plays defensively too as well, coming up with a strong block on a drive to the rim and multiple steals/deflections. As a scorer he was smooth getting into the lane and finishing strong at the basket. Late in the game he became more aggressive attacking the paint and started adding in the points to match. Overall, Gabe changed the game on both ends with his high IQ and playmaking ability.

Previous Rank: 100
-Our scouts came away very impressed this offseason with Hudgens 2-way production as the head of the snake for Theodore Roosevelt. He’s explosive with the ball in his hands, provides a ton of ball pressure as an absolute pitbull at the point of attack, and makes the right read even while racing down the floor at top speed. A 2-sport standout that also excels as the starting QB on the football team, Hudgens will likely build on this momentum as TR’s young core enters a big junior season.

Gabe is one of Roosevelt’s most crucial pieces thanks to his versatility on the floor. He can pick up any guard no matter the size because of his strong defensive ability. He is a hard-nosed defender that doesn’t mind the responsibility of being the defensive pest. Gabe can shoot by on-ball screens and rotates onto the ball from the wing very well. His ability allows for Roosevelt to take some gambles and rely on the backside to slide in rotation. Gabe does well at closing up lanes that were once available to the opposition. Picks off the passing lane all game long, which may be his best defensive attribute. Never sleep while Gabe is on the floor because he will make you pay on both ends.

-Came away impressed by the smooth all-around offensive game from the rising junior in a runner-up finish for T. Rose. Hudgens gets to his spots easily in the halfcourt and comes off of ball screens with great pace, using a nice finishing bag around the basket to score around taller defenders. He hit at least a pair of 3s in each game, played great perimeter defense, and finished the event with a combined 12 stocks to underline his impact on the defensive end of the floor. Love the way that he saw the floor throughout each contest, delivering on-time and on-target hook passes, pocket passes, reverse pivot assists, and kick-ahead passes in transition. Should be amongst the biggest stock-risers in the area in our next rankings update.

Gabe stood out to a handful of our scouts over the course of the 2024-25 season. One of the most reliable 3&D guards I’ve seen on the public school scene. Gabe knocks down threes at a consistent rate and is a huge threat when left open. He can defend either guard position at a high level and usually draws the better offensive options. Still remains a force on the offensive side making jumpers with consistency and isn’t afraid to go downhill and get baskets around the rim. All-around player with the potential to be a main contributor to this Roosevelt squad.

20p 6r 2a 2s vs Friendship Tech Prep
-The athleticism immediately popped on film in a rivalry matchup with Tech Prep. The explosive PG threw down two massive 1-handed dunks in transition off of steals, with most of his forearm above the rim. Hudgens got to his spots in the halfcourt too, using that burst to blow past his matchup to either pull up for a jumper or get all the way to the rim. Hudgens also did a great job defensively both on and off the ball, timing his forays into passing lanes or lunges at the ball to come away with steals without fouling. Definitely expect him to continue rising in the 2027 rankings as he proves to be a consistent contributor at the varsity level.

Gabriel impressed as a solid all-around combo guard for Roosevelt each time I saw him. Pretty efficient with his touches on the ball, makes good reads and takes his open shots with confidence. Gabe can shoot the lights out when he gets into rhythm, forces many defenses to make adjustments. Never rushes with the ball or his dribble, can handle ball pressure and get to his desired spot on the court. Gabe defends well and does not give anything easy to his matchup whether in zone or man. Important piece to Roosevelt’s success so far this year.
