Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Went off for 36 points in a losing effort against Emerald Ridge last week. Was his normal self from 3-point range, dropping in bomb after bomb, doing much of his perimeter shooting off size-ups and just recognizing his defender playing too far off. A lot of that space on the perimeter was due to his early work getting through the defense and to the rim. Drew a ton of fouls and trips to the line while also converting at a good rate around the paint.

Rogers has two really good guards who have shown early on they can set up teammates and put the offense into gear. Gilderhus has been an explosive player in the past, mainly with his ability to score the ball, but this season he looks a bit more patient with the ball and shows some more characteristics of a solid point. He’s secure on the dribble, can prod driving lanes and maintain the dribble, but also has shown the ability to hit passes from all sorts of distances and angles.

Gilderhus really stood out last season for his quickness with the ball, ability to create space with the dribble, and of course, shoot the three at a high level. However, this summer he’s shown a much more diverse approach to the game and a promising skill set as a more traditional point guard. His passing looks to be at a high level, he’s using his tight handle in different ways now, keeping defenders at bay and controlling the pace of the game. He could be a rising junior if he continues to display this level of growth.

Gilderhus is a talented player with the ball, breaking down defenders with a tight handle, and sinking shots from deep with a quick release. He had plenty of big games this season and is a guy that can really get rolling when a couple shots start to fall. He is part of a young and fun backcourt at Rogers that could make a good run next season in the South Puget Sound League.

Gilderhus has shown time and again this season that he has the firepower to go on a solo scoring run and bring his team back or help them pull away in a matter of minutes. He was able to break down defenders with the dribble and dart into the paint where he was deadly with the floater. He also added a quick trigger from outside and nailed down some threes, including a big one in the fourth quarter that gave Rogers the lead.

The kid was solid and the best player on the floor for a good bit of the time. He played with great confidence, getting to the basket to drop a couple nice floaters. He hit some shots from deep, and got after it on defense with good ball pressure. He was able to use his dribble well to get himself free, and didn’t turn it over. I had him for 16 points, but he probably had more. I also had him for 4 assists. Not a bad performance when you consider that it was probably in around 20 minutes on the floor. With a running clock.

I know this kid played a lot of varsity basketball as a freshman last year. I had written about him before. The thing is, he looked so much better in person. In fact, I watched the whole game, then went up and asked him his name. I didn’t recognize him from the film. I have to think that varsity experience gave him the confidence that he needs to be the game changer he was. He was attacking the defense off the dribble, getting up into people on defense, and draining three balls. He was probably the MVP in one game I watched. He put himself on full display and caused a lot of problems with his quickness. He had no fear and it showed. Game changer.
