Layer is a sound guard who is very effective touching the paint. He has a resourceful mid-range game he uses often. He frequently finds his teammates in good spots on the floor for them to convert scoring chances. Layer should see a big increase in his role the upcoming high school season and should be on of the premier guards in district 3. He keeps his handle on a string and can change hands quickly. Like how he can score using his rip through moves. Layer has also shown some flashes from behind the three point line.

Stepping up in defeat to give the state champs more than a run for their money, Layer delivered a 15-point performance while handling primary ballhandling duties for the bulk of the game’s 40 minutes. The junior floor general was effective getting to his midrange stop-and-pop game, elevating smoothly to get his shot off over lengthier defenders. He showed a dependable handle while resisting the urge to overdo it, getting to his spots efficiently and making clean decisions while playing strong off of 2 feet in the paint. Despite being relatively undersized, Layer also showed that he has the quickness, athleticism, and heart to maintain an impact in the floor game on a court full of D1 athletes. He should have a chance to attract scholarship-level attention over the next year despite not passing the eye test at first glance.
