A high-level competitor, Van De Graaf is a kid who can impact the game in a lot of ways, whether it’s crashing the boards, working for extra possessions, being a solid team defender, or making quick decisions and sharing the ball offensively. He’s a physically mature player who has been overpowering offensively when he can get near the paint, and just has a knack for making plays and finding the ball in big spots.

He was banged up entering the game, but they leaned on him in some key stretches in the second half to ignite their offense. It was a stagnant first half offensively for both sides, and after going back and forth for three quarters, De Graaf stepped up in the fourth to get some penetration, draw up extra defenders, and started creating shots for others. He also had a few big rebounds late in the game to help Zillah eke out the win over Bainbridge.

Loved his mentality, specifically challenging players at the rim. Went up with a big baseline dunk with the big coming over to contest, then absorbed contact on another drive, shifted his shot mid-air, and finished the and-one. Did it on the defensive end too, hustling over from the help side to get a big block on an opposing big. Played with a lot of heart and tenacity.

Van De Graaf is a big guard who can use his size to shoot over defenders on the perimeter but also does a great job working through different levels, showing some nimble feet and good balance. While his athleticism is a definite factor in the paint offensively, it also helps him play a big role defensively with his ability to cover ground with quick reactions and block shots both above the rim and on the occasional jump shooter.

Dekker is already a known name, or should be after he just helped Zillah to a undefeated record and the 1A state championship. He’s an athletic wing who can score from all 3 levels and knows the game well. His coahcing staff and teammates trust him so much, so much that they let him take the last shot in the championship game. He missed the 3 that he took, but showed high IQ by following his shot, grabbing the rebound and make the game winning layup. He’s a top riser in the class after the season.

The big Zillah guard definitely understands how to use his size to his advantage, playing strong and controlled downhill and showing an ability to make shots in close, among traffic, and with varied finishes. In a win against Royal, Van De Graaf was able to make several strong drives with composure to make the right decision; whether it was pulling up short for a floater or short jumper, giving the ball up when defenders stepped up, or using the dribble to split defenders and get to the rim. He finished off the district championship with 17 points and five rebounds, as well as a handful of big defensive plays. Zillah remains undefeated on the year and matches up with Tenino in the opening round of the state tournament this Friday.

You always look for how players respond to the game when their shots aren’t falling and Van De Graaf really impressed me with his resolve against Quincy. He wasn’t getting shots to fall from the perimeter and had some tough misses inside but came up big for his team in others way to help seal a big win for Zillah against a talented Quincy squad. Van De Graaf is an exceptional and versatile defender who played tough defense, used his reach and anticipation to tip passes and get involved on the glass. He also chased down a couple of loose balls and long rebounds later in the game that helped tilt the game in his team’s favor.
