Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
A versatile jumbo guard, Cornwell has been asked to take a significant step forward in his production this year with all-state swingman JJ Kelly now starting for Ohio University. He’s answered the bell, averaging over 16 points per game for the seventh-seeded Trojans, highlighted by a 38-point performance earlier in the season. Cornwell is effective using his size and bulky frame to navigate to his spots with pace off the dribble despite a lack of blow-by speed. He’s a dependable shooter from the perimeter making him an effective off-ball weapon when slotted next to another playmaker. Cornwell profiles as a high-priority recruit at the small-college level with the chance to sneak into a scholarship role in right system.

Cornwell is going to have an outstanding year with Chambersburg, who fell to the eventual District 3 6A champs in the semifinals a season ago. He is a do-it-all player with skills all across the board. He can handle the ball and facilitate an offense with confidence and ease. His high efficiency from the perimeter helps with his inside game, as he often gets defenders to bite on his pump-fake. On the defensive side, Colton plays with immense energy and is an amazing charge-taker. Chambersburg is going to have a great chance at a district title this winter.

Cornwell showed he could do a little of everything for his Sideline Cancer squad. He had no problem getting in the mix and finding ways to stay involved in the game. He converted on a few shots from behind the arc a place he has made a calling card of his over the last several seasons. Cornwell also finished inside. He is someone who should see a ton of small colleges prioritize him over the next several months.

Cornwell is stock rising junior who has already post games of 22 points (5 3PM) and 20 points (2 threes) this season. Cornwell does a tremendous job of establishing his 3-point shot and then working off that weapon. Once he has drained a couple shots from long distance, Cornwell will use a head / ball fake followed by a side dribble to relocate into space for an open look. Or Cornwell can execute a head / ball fake, then put the ball on the deck and attack the paint. When he gets into the lane, Cornwell can score via floaters and lay-ins or drop a dime to the dunker spot. Defensively, Cornwell is a plus player with quick hands that he uses to pick opponent’s pockets.
