Colby Murphy
About Colby
Expert Analysis
Van Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
He showcased enticing crossroads between productivity and long-term upside. Murphy is a sturdy build, mobile forward with a high motor and useful blend of skills. He displayed great feel and flashes of versatility on both ends of the floor. Murphy can knock down jumpers at a respectable rate or attack off the bounce. He’s a willing passer-by who doesn’t need the ball to be effective. Murphy also provides consistent activity as a scrappy defender and engaged rebounder.

Colby was one of the prospects that it was refreshing watching the young man compete with such urgency and want to on both ends of the floor. Using a strong frame to his advantage, he lived on the glass this past weekend, gobbling up rebounds at a high rate. He also provided a steady defensive presence guarding 1 thru 4 positions while finishing put backs regularly throughout games play. Showing offensive chops knocking the mid-range shot when the opportunity presented itself.

-I wouldn’t call Murphy a prospect with a ton of burst but he really can elevate to snag rebounds in traffic. His ability to chip down for rebounds to help out the bigs was huge for his team in closing out several key possessions late in the 2H. At the offensive end of the floor Murphy will serve as a key slasher that gets high percentage looks at the rim and earns several trips to the FT line each game. The midrange jumper is consistent off the bounce or off the catch, although I would like to see him take and make more 3s as it becomes a higher percentage look for him. But his size and frame allow him to bully most defenders off their spot on his drives to the basket.

-Despite dealing with an ankle injury that limited his explosiveness and mobility, Murphy still turned in a standout performance in a big win. Murphy showed the ability to use a strong set of shoulders and base to clear out space on drives to the rim before finishing through contact around the basket. Although he was living in the lane and attacking the basket, he showed that he can hit jumpers both off the bounce and off the catch from 18′ and in despite defensive pressure. Fully expect him to make a nice jump up the rankings next week.

Showed he can score from behind the arc. He did a good jumping lanes and turning defense to offense. He finished above the rim. He filled the lane in transition. Roberts has a quick first step which allows him to be a step ahead on the defensive end. He should see a ton of small colleges involved with him.

Finished with 21 and 13 with 5 stocks to place himself on our radar a few weeks ago in a close OT loss to DCI. Really strong downhill driving guard that has the balance and biomechanics to stop on a dime from a dead sprint in transition to pull up for a short jumper. Murphy made a point not to settle for jumpers, hitting the offensive glass extremely heavy for a guard (7 O Boards) to create extra looks at the rim for himself or others in the paint.

Colby made the transfer over to the Cesar Chavez Parkside Eagles and has been on a tear. Averaging well over 20 points a game and has some big moments up to this point in the year. 3-level scorer that can operate anywhere on the floor. Takes advantage of his mismatches and uses his height and vertical to elevate over the defense. His effectiveness backing down smaller defenders and turning for the shot or short layup. Very intriguing prospect that is starting to scratch the surface of his potential after changing jersey’s this season.
