Devontae Cobb | Prep Hoops Scout
Explosive and powerful off the dribble, pounding the rock with purpose before using his footwork to split defenders and finish through traffic or contact. He was at his best and toughest to contain whenever he caught the ball and went into triple threat, sizing his man up with quick-twitch pump fakes and jab steps before shooting or taking off with a blow-by first step. The moment his feet touched the lane line he was capable of taking flight and finishing with length and touch, a skill that projects as automatic dunk finishes at the next level.

This was a statement weekend for Vaughn Jr and Grind Until, hanging around with an extremely talented Indiana Elite 16 U squad for the full 32 minutes. Vaughn Jr started the game with a loud pull-up 3-pointer and then got going downhill as a slasher to the rim. I thought Grind Until ran some nice sets to isolate Vaughn Jr on one side of the court and Vaughn Jr had a couple deceleration moves to the rim that led to free throws. While I was impressed with Vaughn Jr with his first year on varsity for Saint Ignatius this winter, he’s clearly taken a larger step with the ball in his hands and needs to be bumped back comfortably into the top 10 during the next rankings update.

One of the most athletic players in the 2028 class, Vaughn Jr has hit the ground running at the varsity level this season. Able to make an impact in transition as an above the rim finisher while also being a switchable defender in the half-court. The amount of strong athletes Saint Ignatius can throw at you makes them an extremely tough team to overpower despite playing multiple underclassmen heavy minutes. The next step for Vaughn will be consistently making shots and setting teammates up in the half-court and he has plenty of time to polish those skills.

A high upside wing who could breakout this season, Vaughn Jr is in the perfect situation to become a household name. There’s a lot new about Saint Ignatius this season with a new head coach after Cam Joyce moved out to California and new names to know after the dynamic duo of Damon Friery and Quinn Woidke are now at Division I programs after an incredible run for the Blue and Gold. Vaughn Jr has all the tools to be the next star player for the Wildcats with his combination of length, athleticism, ball handling ability and motor. The flashes Vaughn Jr showed this summer (some of the brightest captured by 3rd coast hoops) were very intriguing and he’s a prospect who we’ll be following along with his development.

I’ve heard really good things about Vaughn Jr before finally getting to see him in person on Saturday afternoon. What I heard was true as Vaughn showed why he’s one of the most athletic wings in northeast Ohio’s 2028 class and a prospect with incredibly high upside. Vaughn Jr has a quick first step and scored at the rim with a variety of tough finishes. In transition Vaughn Jr tried dunking on a defender and was rewarded with free throws. I want to see how well Vaughn Jr shoots the basketball from 3-point range during my next scout of his game but the physical tools, motor and production he already showed me has me very intrigued.
