Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Explosive athlete, who can make highlight reel plays on offense. While also stepping up and doing whatever is required on the defensive end. Knows when to gamble for steals on defense, or when to move his feet and smoother the opposition. Always looks for lax passes, in order to quickly turn defense into momentum shifting offense. Improved his offensive game as a senior, with improved shooting as well. Type of prospect that should help raise a program’s floor as an underclassman by competing in practice. Then steadily earns a bigger role as the years goes by.

Cowns scored 19 points, went over 1000 points for her career and perhaps most importantly helped McLoud to the tournament title with a win over Chandler. The senior has always been a bouncy athlete, dangerous off the dribble and a strong defender. On Saturday night, he showed the strides he’s made as a ballhandler and shooter. Looked more confident handling the ball pressure Chandler applied. And the McLoud offense seemed designed to get him mismatches on opposing forwards. If they sagged off he hit the open jumper, or he blew by to attack the rim. Has made clear progress as a complete scorer. Saturday night looked to be good momentum for him and McLoud as they ramp up for the Class 4A playoff gauntlet.

Cowns’ motor always runs hard and Saturday was no different. He flew around the court and even caught a body to end one transition play with authority. Defensively, he finds a good blend between gambling and playing sound defense to make life hard on ballhandlers. With his long arms, it’s easy to really like his potential as a defender at the next level to be able to switch between point guards, scoring guards and wings. His jumper is continuing to improve, making him even more well rounded. Great building block type prospect for small college four year programs.

Cowns is a great mixture of a high motor and explosiveness. Watching him play in the small school ranks, he’s more of an anticipatory defender right now with the way he plays the passing lanes or explodes for a transition block. But with his combination of motor, wingspan and athleticism he profiles as player who could be a monster on the ball. Which come this grassroots season could be part of his niche that helps him appeal to college coaches. The focus for now though will be Cowns making an impact on both ends of the court with McLoud trying to make a Big House push in Class 4A that after the top two squads, feels wide open.

A bouncy, defensive minded guard, Cowns relentlessly attacked the rim to start the game. He was rewarded with a pair of slams in the first half and would score 23 points. A lot of his scoring did come around the rim, where his quick off his feet explosiveness and long arms gives him a huge edge when finishing. But he did hit a nice turnaround in the mid-range and does seem to be developing a counter punch and a jumper to when teams try to play off him to negate his athleticism edge.

Cowns is a guy who loves to operate in transition and is at his best playing with a team that can get up and down the floor. On the defensive side of the ball, he always plays hard on every play and goes after every loose ball. He is a guy that I like to call the dirty work guy because he doesn’t mind doing all the dirty work things that contribute to a team winning basketball games. To me, it seems as if he always had a knack for where the basketball will be on the defensive side of the ball and always seems to get his hands on it. He had a few smaller guards on his team so it was tough to see how he does handling the ball but when he did have it in his hands, he did a great job being able to make stuff happen for his team.

Cowns is very raw but has great upside, with his athleticism and ability to shoot the basketball he is a perfect complimentary player to a guard who loves to penetrate and put pressure on the defense. He plays with a bunch of energy on both ends of the court and due to his quick hands, he can help start the fastbreak for your team by getting steals.

A productive small town product, Cowns plays with a fearless mentality. He’s got a good burst when it comes to attacking the rim off the bounce, or even surprisingly skying for a few rebounds. Mix in a couple made threes, and it looks like the improving athletically and aggressive small town guard is ready for a big sophomore year in a competitive Class 4A for McLoud.
