Braydon Hawthorne
About Braydon
Expert Analysis

The top ranked player in West Virginia had a big game to help Huntington Prep take down Lutheran East. Hawthorne started the game with a 3-pointer off a BLOB and had an early slam dunk off an alley-oop. Combine that with a couple tough 3-pointers from the top of the key and a few follow up dunks on putbacks and offensive rebounds and Hawthorne was impacting the game at the rim and beyond the arc. His best pass came on a dribble drive and drop off which led to one of Hawthorne’s four assists, which tied a team lead. It’ll be interesting to track Hawthorne throughout his college career, he had mostly mid-major interest before the lone high major program in his home state came calling. He certainly has the upside to make an impact down the (country) roads in his career.

When Hawthorne is finished at Huntington Prep he will have one of the most storied and recognized ascents in the recruiting world that not only we’ve seen in WV but across the country. It should go without saying Hawthorne has an elite level work ethic to go along with his size and elite athleticism. Recently described as a top 50 rated recruit by scouts, it seems WVU got the steal of a lifetime. Hawthorne is not only labeled as one of the fastest rising recruits in the US in recent history but there’s also talk of NBA prospect abuzz. We’d certainly say he’s the rare combination of highest rated recruit with the highest ceiling.

The talented Hawthorne is going to be staying in state and heading to West Virginia after he finishes up his senior season at Huntington Prep. You saw some of the skills that made him such a unique prospect. Not many guys at Hawthorne’s size have the ball handling and fluidity that he does. Able to put the ball on the floor and attack off the dribble, Hawthorne had a couple floaters and touch shots at the rim. With the size and athleticism that Huntington Prep has, they can be really tough to stop in transition and Hawthorne excels in transition.

is a big guard trapped in a forward’s body. The Beckley native has grown at a rapid pace and currently stretches to 6’8″ with possible room to grow. When you see Hawthorne its easy to see he’s a guard but just with a long body. Plays like a shooting guard but with his length will definitely be projected as a wing/small forward type of position player. Hawthorne shoots it well, handles like a two guard and passes like a point.

Woodrow Wilson has produced its fair share of Division I players over the years and Hawthorne is yet another. However, Hawthorne has made the move to in state basketball academy Huntington Prep to finish his high school and has left Woodrow for what would seemingly be for the remainder of his high school career. Hawthorne’s physical growth spurt into a 6’8″ frame has at times hampered him physically but the skill level and length are going to match up eventually and obviously Division I college coaches know and anticipate that. Offered from Radford and Wichita St., Braydon will now embark on a barnstorming basketball tour with HP and be in front of dozens of D1 coaches including many powers 5’s. This kid is far from reaching his ceiling physically or in terms of skill and we are going to enjoy every step of the way while tracking his progress.
