With the move to districts in 6A, Northwest Classen has been giving a tall task the last two years competing against suburban programs. And the sparkplug point guard has never backed down from the fight. He’s scoring over 20 a game, while also handing out more than his fair share of assists. Butler has deep range off the dribble, which is important for the gravity he creates. And opens up his ability to get downhill to score himself or create for others. Plays well out of ball screens as well, something college coaches should love. Has the look of a player who excels at a Region 2 JuCo before finding a home for the rest of his collegiate career.

Butler’s efficiency for a smaller guard continues to be impressive. He has great shot selection from three, rarely forcing a bad look. What was impressive for his continual development, was the calmness he played with as a decision maker in the uptempo game. He handed out dimes with either hands, finding open shooters and teammates at the rim. Attempts to speed him up never seemed to bother him. And of course when needed to, he stepped up as a scorer, including a big corner three in overtime.

The lefty has a bit of a magic in his handle with the way he can navigate through traffic and hit tough contested shots at the rim for a smaller player. During a second half push for Classen, it was the quick junior consistently not panicking and finding his way into the paint. Where he’s agile at avoiding contact to finish, or pitching it out to open teammates. Butler leaned on going on his left to get going, but showed good ambidexterity with attacking the right just as comfortably once he defense started trying to force him to his off hand.

Butler thrived in the fast past game, where he was able to show off his great footwork and feel on drives. Or rifle passes ahead that benefited his teammates. While it was often transition playmaking, he did have a great find on a halfcourt drive late in the contest. His jumper was a bit hit or miss on the night, as when his feet were set and the beneficiary it was often going on. But some of his off the dribble attempts looked unbalanced.
In the final moments of regulation, he missed a pair of free throws that would’ve secured the win. But he battled through the adversity of that with a great, clutch take to the rim to win it in double overtime.
