Rivers and Stadium were in full control in their season-opener against Bethel. It all started on defense and as one of the quickest players in his class, Rivers did a great job stifling ballhandlers and even made things tough on guys who managed to work in closer to the hoop. The Tigers also got out in transition and Rivers was able to beat defenders with his pace and passing, getting the ball up the court for quick buckets. That quickness translated to drives in the half-court as well, allowing him to draw extra defenders or beat guys all the way to the rim.

Previous Rank: 110rnYou want your guards to play with the kind of approach Rivers shows. He’s a guy that will challenge whoever who he lines up against on both sides of the ball, has the burst and handle to blow by most defenders, and has some quick hands defensively to challenge ballhandlers and apply pressure all over the ball. He’s a tough kid who also has a great pull-up he can go to a lot because of the respect defenders have for his speed.

Rivers was excellent against Rogers, setting the pace, looking to attack and score but being ready to dish it when help defenders rotated over to meet him. He is a smaller guard but shows incredible aggression to get into the heart of the defense and has great burst and balance to dance between defenders. His passes had zip and were placed right on the money whether he was kicking out off a drive, working the pick and roll, or feeding the post. It was an all-around solid game for the junior who was a steady presence for the Tigers.

The all-league guard helped Stadium to a turnaround season and the opening round of the 3A state tournament. He’s a smaller guard that has elite quickness and a phenomenal pull-up game with his stop and go ability. He’s shown nice touch from the mid-range and an ability to get to the rack and finish despite his smaller stature. Rivers should be the top guy returning next year at Stadium and will lead the way from the point guard spot.
