At 6-foot-4, Smith can play shooting guard and small forward and has the ability to create his own shot off the dribble. He helped Licking win 20 games last season and the Wildcats are poised to be one of the top small school teams in area basketball this season.
think my game is being an all-around player, on both sides of the ball, not just scoring it but playing good defense and rebounding. I also use my athleticism to play above the rim a lot.
Smith spent the summer competing for South Central Fury as well as his high school team.
“I felt like I had a very good summer, I played a lot of games, as well as being in the gym and working out a lot,” he said. “Two of my main focus points were trying to get stronger and more athletic.”
Expectations are high for Licking this season after the Wildcats won 21 games a year ago. Not only does head coach Ben Glasgow return Smith, but they also return Nathan Wilson as well, a 6-foot-5 wing player that averaged more than 25 points per game last season.
“I think my high school team this year could be the best I have ever played on,” Smith said. “I expect big things from us in conference, regular season tournaments, and districts. We won 21 games last year and we didn’t lose anyone so I feel like we are good right now but we have a lot of room to improve.”
Among the games Smith says he has circled on his calendar is showdowns against the Hartville Eagles, Liberty and Mountain Grove.
“They are all good programs and Hartville is off of a state championship and Mountain Grove went to the Final Four last year and I am excited to see where we match up against them,” Smith said.
