Winning the Division II-A Boys State Tournament will heal the wound.
That’s the direction the Lynx are heading in after their 58-49 win over CPA Wednesday night in the first round of the tournament.
Lausanne will play at Grace Christian Academy this Saturday in a quarterfinals matchup.
Here are 3 observations from Lausanne’s win over the Lions:
The Lynx shot the ball well against CPA
In its loss to FACS, Lausanne didn’t shoot the ball well. Overall, the Lynx didn’t play well for three and a half quarters. On Wednesday night, Lausanne never trailed. In the first half, the Lynx made five 3s. Junior big man Moussa Cisse saw double teams, but his teammates were making shots.
Senior guard Nick Floyd made two 3s in the first half.
Freshman guard AJ Dillworth really helped the offense. He made back-to-back 3s in the first quarter to give Lausanne an early 10-4 lead. He’s playing with a lot of seniors, who are hopeful to end their season with a state championship.
Senior combo guard Jalen Bo Montgomery has been pleased with Dillworth’s performance this season.
“He’s nice. He’s going to be nice,” Montgomery said about Dillworth, who finished with seven points. “I believe he’s the No. 1 freshman in the city right now. He will definitely be one of the top players in the state once he gets a little older. He plays defense. He’s a 3-and-D guy.”
As a team, the Lynx made 19 of 26 shots from the field and recorded 14 assists. Montgomery finished with 21 points and five assists. He went 10 for 10 from the free throw line.
Lausanne’s frontcourt forced CPA to live and die by the 3
With Cisse in the paint, guards for CPA didn’t want to go into the lane. Instead, the Lions relied on their 3-point shooting to stay in the game. It was working in the third quarter. Trailing 25-14 entering the third quarter, CPA went on a 14-4 run to get within one. Sophomore forward Braeden Moore scored seven straight points.
After that, the Lynx locked in defensively and contested a lot of the Lions’ 3s. At times, CPA’s guards drove into the lane, trying to get a layup, but Cisse was right there waiting for all of them. He finished the night with five blocks to go along with his 16 points and nine rebounds.
“Those guys have shot 1,046 3s up until this point. They’re averaging around 33 3s a game, which is a lot different from anything we have seen in the past,” Davis said. “We had to try and get ready for that. They shot it well. We knew they were going to shoot it well. We just wanted to keep our composure.
“Basketball is a game of runs, so when they made two or three of them, we just made sure we stayed together and keep our composure and it ended up paying off for us.”
Despite Lausanne contesting the Lions’ 3s, CPA still made 12 shots from beyond the arc. Moore led the team with 13 points.
CPA should be one of the best teams in DII-A next season
The Lions will return seven key players next season. Moore, who’s 6-foot-8, will be a junior, along with Jake Dykstra and Evan Shiflet. Jordan Dewalt, Sam Smith, Braden Zapp and Drew Cox will be seniors next season. This group should be able to compete for a state title next season.
Recruiting information: UNC-Asheville and St. Bonaventure are the latest schools to reach out to Montgomery of the Lynx. Georgia has been showing interest. Two weekends ago, the 6-5 guard went on an official visit to Holy Cross.
