The Indians are undefeated on the year and not just winning; they are blowing people out. They just beat a rock-solid Dakota Prairie team over the weekend in the Ramsey County Tournament championship. Doug Yankton is the engine on both ends of the floor but the Indians are a complete outfit with Jayden Yankton and Bronson Walter providing excellent play inside and out.
Rugby
The Panthers are one of five undefeated teams left in Class B and have shown no signs of slowing down. Trace Goven is having a terrific year averaging 16.4 points and nearly six rebounds. Jaden Hamilton is putting up 20 points and nearly 10 rebounds. Devan Michels and Warren Walker have been steady in the backcourt and Cole Slaubaugh and Isaiah Bundy-Smith are solid in the frontcourt. This team is complete and a legitimate state title contender.
Hillsboro/Central Valley
The Burros suffered their first loss last week against Hatton/Northwood but don’t drop far with some other top-ranked teams also taking losses. Hillsboro/Central Valley is still an elite team. The Burros have a number of challenging games on the horizon, as they’ll face Four Winds/Minnewaukan this upcoming week.
Richland
The Colts suffered an early-season loss to Hillsboro/Central Valley but are otherwise perfect on the year. They blew out Lisbon and May-Port-C-G last week. Cole Myers is on his way to another all-state season, averaging 20.7 points and eight rebounds. He’s knocking down two 3-pointers per game as well. Gavin Reilad has been excellent on both ends of the floor again too.
Enderlin
A popular pick as a breakout team this winter, the Eagles have burst onto the Class B scene with a 6-0 record. Joe Hurlburt is having a ridiculous year so far, averaging 25.8 points and 15.8 rebounds per game. The Eagles are going to around for a while too, as four of their top seven rotation players are underclassmen.
New Rockford-Sheyenne
The Rockets will finally play another game this upcoming week after being off since December 29. They better not be rusty, as their schedule picks up in a big way in the next week with matchups against Warwick, Dakota Prairie and Four Winds/Minnewaukan.
St. John
Another contender out of Region 4, the Woodchucks are one of the most balanced and toughest offensive groups in the state. Depth might be a question mark but all five starters for the Woodchucks average double figures in scoring with Michael Dunn and Tyreece Gunville leading the way at better than 15 points per game apiece.
Hatton/Northwood
The Thunder jump into the rankings after notching wins over ranked teams in Hillsboro/Central Valley and Langdon/Edmore/Munich. Hatton/Northwood has two losses on the year – a two-point loss to No. 5 Enderlin, and to No. 1 Four Winds/Minnewaukan. Colton Konschak, Avery Thorsgard and Alex Wolfe lead a balanced attack and the Thunder showed last week that it can also win with terrific defense.
Shiloh Christian
The Skyhawks have played as tough of a schedule as any team in the state this year and that finally caught up with them this past week, as they lost to Beulah and Kindred on back-to-back nights. Both teams were ranked in the preseason and certainly have the talent to get back into that mix, so those losses aren’t big upsets. The Skyhawks play elite defense but may need to find more scoring after senior forward Jaden Mitzel.
New Salem-Almont
Want elite defense? New Salem-Almont is allowing less than 40 points per game so far this year and it’s allowed the Holsteins to start 7-0. Teyden Soupir is one of the better off-guards in Class B and gives the Holsteins a bona-find go-to scorer.
