With ranked matchups taking place all throughout each of the two days, there won’t be a shortage of good basketball going on this weekend.
Here are some of the top guards to watch over the two day event
Doug Yankton, Four Winds/Minnewaukan
Yankton is one of the best overall players in Class B, earned all-state honors as a junior and now leads what some believe is the best team in the state. The 6-foot-3 swingman is an excellent slasher, strong facilitator, tenacious rebounder and tough defender. In what figures to be one of the best games of the weekend, he’ll lead the Indians against a solid Dickinson Trinity team.
Trace Goven, Rugby
Goven has been the go-to guy for Rugby for two years now and leads a Panther team that has state tournament aspirations as a senior. He’s one of the best slashers and finishers in Class B and gets it done on both ends of the floor.
Trey Brandt, Beulah
Just a sophomore, Brandt is one of the best point guards in Class B. He’s a solid shooter, slasher and facilitator who plays beyond his years. He’ll have his hands full with a number of talented guards for St. John, but he will be one of the best players over the course of the weekend.
Matt Stafford, Dickinson Trinity
A top-notch two-way player, Stafford has the skill and athleticism to dominate on both ends of the floor. He’s a streaky shooter who can fill it up when he’s going well, but his defensive ability is among the best in the state on the wing.
Zach Hendrickson, Our Redeemers
Hendrickson is young, but he’s got a huge upside on the wing and is one of the best pure scorers in this event. He’s a strong perimeter shooter and can get to the rim with ease.
Seth Anderson, St. John
Anderson is one of the best shooters in Class B. He’s the leading returning scorer for St. John and while the Woodchucks have no shortage of capable shot-makers, his ability to space the floor and create makes them one of the toughest teams to stop.
Simon Romfo, Langdon/Edmore/Munich
Romfo is one of the best two-way players in Class B. The junior guard averaging 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and nearly three steals for LEM a year ago as a sophomore and leads the Cardinals into a matchup against Bishop Ryan.
Bradley Defender, St. John
One of the best all-around players in Class B, Defender is an excellent scorer and terrific defensive presence. Defender is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds on the young season and does a little bit of everything for a St. John team that will face Beulah in one of the best matchups of the weekend.
Isaac Doll, Hazen
Doll’s been a stud at Hazen for years and leads a team that has a chance to contend in Region 7. The 6-foot-3 swingman gets to the rim as well as anybody in the area, rebounds at a high level and can make plays for his teammates.
Warren Walker, Rugby
Walker is off to an awesome start this year, averaging 11 points and four assists per game during the Panthers’ run to a CNDC championship last week. The junior point guard won’t be the featured guy in his team’s attack, but he gives the Panthers yet another excellent playmaking piece.
