The day 1 action did not disappoint as several standouts stole the show. With so many terrific performances, we wanted to highlight some of the players who may have fallen under the radar. In this article PH takes a look at some of the top Under The Radar Performances from Day 1.
London Coleman 6’4 SF Silverado (#24PHN 2020) – Coleman played with terrific effort and energy. Silverado suffered through a lot of adversity, including losing star guard Martell Williams. However, behind Coleman’s 21 the Skyhawks were able to advance.
Sheldon Grant 6’2 PG Aquinas 2021 – Loved what Grant did. Ne controlled the tempo of the game throughout. Never was sped up and consistently made the right decision for his teammates. Nick Hopkins had the monster game, but Grant’s ability to protect the ball and create plays was also huge.
Mehki Walker 6’3 PF Cimarron 2020 (#37 2020) – I don’t want Mehki’s performance to go un-noticed. He battled all game and helped bring the Spartans back from an early deficit. This was one of the best games, I’ve seen him play in person, as he showed off his range, as well as his run and jump athletic ability.
Faizon Woods 6’1 PG Legacy 2020 (#70 2020) (featured image) – Woods put on his usual tough as nails performance. Competes every single possession, and takes as much pride in his ability to defend, as he does on the offensive end. Legacy played in front of the most electric atmosphere on the day, and Woods fed off the energy to help lead his team to a victory.
Santos Sanchez 5’10 PG Dysart 2021 – Sanchez played Robin to Fornerette’s Batman. He displayed a consistent shooting stroke and was effective playing on and off the ball.
Ethan Marcus 5’7 PG Palo Verde 2020 – With all the talent on Palo, the one player the Basic coaches were concerned about was Marcus. He didn’t disappoint. The Panthers didn’t get the win, but the senior PG was brilliant, scoring 17 for the game.
Jimar Mitchell 5’11 SG Rancho 2022 (#16PHN 2022) – Mitchell was one of the top underclassmen on the day. Rancho didn’t get the victory, however they put together a hard fought effort, behind Mitchell’s 14.
Karson Roberts 5’10 PG Bonanza 2023 – My apologies to Karson Roberts. I have seen him enough now to know that he is one of the top Freshmen in the state. He goes a bit overlooked simply because his poise and play make you forget that he’s only a Freshmen. You better get Bonanza now because behind players like Roberts and the leadership of Hall of Fame Coach Kevin Soares they are going to be good sooner rather than later. Roberts finished with 12 points on the day.
Iopu Tauiliili 6’3 PF Chaparral 2020 – Hawkins gets the love but Tauiliili was just as impressive. The senior big displayed soft hands and a great ability to finish. Chap advanced with a win over a gritty Cimarron team, and behind the dynamic play of Hawkins and Tauiliili have the type of 1-2 punch that can carry them to the title.
