Here are some of the games to watch:
Fargo Davies vs Bismarck Century, 3 p.m., Saturday at Fargo South
Davies goes into the year ranked No. 2 in Class A while the Patriots return a top-10 outfit with albeit, less overwhelming talent and more questions than previous years. This will be a good test for both.
The Eagles are breaking in three new starters but also return perhaps the most top-to-bottom talent in Class A. Cam Van Dam and Cole Hage are back to man frontcourt spots while Grayson Haman and Ty Satter should step into starting jobs in the backcourt. The Patriots have one of the best players in the state in senior guard Cade Feeney and will lean heavily on returning juniors like Ian Ely and Justice Coleman.
West Fargo Sheyenne at Mandan, 7:30 p.m., Friday
The No. 5 and No. 7 teams in Class A square off for the second year in a row as the Mustangs head to Mandan in what could be one of the most intriguing matchups of the year. The Mustangs are going to be breaking in two new big men in Jacksen Moni and Jah’Heem Leake and they’ll have their hands full with Elijah Klein, the Mandan all-state big man. Expect the Mustangs to send a lot of bodies Klein’s way, but it’s also safe to expect Klein to produce through it.
On the flip side, the Mustangs should have an advantage on the wings with Blake Berg and Tyler Terhark, while Mandan is breaking in a handful of new guys on the perimeter.
The point guard matchup should be a good one, as Jaxton Wiest is one of the best two-way guards in the state and Zion Dettman is a really talented senior guard who could be a breakout guy this year as a starter.
Devils Lake at Minot, 7:30 p.m., Saturday
Minot is ranked No. 3 in Class A going into the year and the Magicians have arguably the most talented team from top to bottom in the state. They’ve got two double-figure scorers in the backcourt in Jaxon Gunville and Deonte Martinez and they return what could be an equally strong frontcourt headlined by Easton Larson and Caden Johnson.
The frontcourt matchup will be the one to watch as Larson and Johnson among others will get to deal with Devils Lake forward Grant Nelson, the 6-foot-9 all-state senior. Nelson averaged 16 and 12 last year plus five blocks and committed to NDSU after an awesome summer on the AAU circuit. He’ll have to carry an otherwise inexperienced Devils Lake team and he’ll have stiff competition in the paint on Saturday.
