On the back of feisty post defense and precisision offense, Wilson Central knocked off Shelbyville, 68-58. Defense helped WCHS keep Shelbyville from scoring consistently.
Seth Beck drew two charges. Everybody challenged layups and clawed for loose balls. Wilson Central is not a frighteningly big opponent. If there is any traditional forward in their starting lineup it is Maravich Bond and yet they heroically defended the short shot.
MVP: Jordan Beard, Wilson Central
Shelbyville Player Notes
FIRST HALF | SECOND HALF | ||
Jones | 1 | ||
#10 Heath | Finisher | 2, 3, 2 | 2 |
#24 Jailain Anderson 2021 |
Really fluid athlete. Moves fluidly. Looks like a Keaton Allen body type. 6’2″ or 6’3″ High jumper? Just smooth body control Best athlete on the floor. 2-3 early FG’s 0-2 3’s Easily the best athlete on the floor. Handle is just ok. But, so elegant. With skill could be a college player. Needs a lot of skill work tho. Aggressive offensive rebunder. More than anyone Jailain took advantage of the undersized Wilson Central team. Good effort tracking back. Blocked about a half dozen shots. |
2, 2, 2 | 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1 |
#34 Jayson Jones | Rebounds well. Not a great looking shot. Too many off-balanced shots. Really needs to become a basketball player instead of a gym class hero. | 3 | 2, 2 , 3, 3 |
#23 Erman Garcia | Below average shooter. Below average defender. Super tiny. Clever passer. Sees angles that aren’t there. Loves to make probing passes. | 2 | 2, 1 , 3, 1 |
#35 Turrentine | Loves to take 3’s. Not especially efficient. | 3, 3, 3
#33 Sutton | Raliegh Sutton is another thin yet elegant athlete. Shelbyville runs out so many raw hoopers with his frame.
#2 White G | 3 | ||
2020 Caleb Lawrence, Wilson Central (20 points)
Scored his team’s first five points. Both field goal attempts appeared to be designed plays for the Wildcats’ star guard. Lawrence made three three-pointers. Caleb is ranked #138 in the state.
2020 Connor Miller, Wilson Central
Gritty. Small. Tough. Steel nerves. Plays like he is invested in the outcome.
2021 Zack Markus, Wilson Central
2020 Jordan Beard, Wilson Central
Crafty. Loves contact. Initiates contact and forces opponents to foul. Loves to draw defenders and then create with the dribble of pass.
2020 Maravich Bond, Wilson Central
High energy guy. Infuses the team with fury. The most dominating 5-foot-7 power forward in the state.
2020 Adler Kerr, Wilson Central (13 points, 11 pts in 2nd half)
Hyper aggressive. Scrappy and hungry. Moves his feet with purpose.

Game Flow
Wilson Central lead 15-11 after the first quarter. Caleb Lawrence scored five of the Wildcats’ first seven points and seven of the first 15. Maravich helped in the first quarter by running the floor and clattering into bodies. Shelbyville’s wings settled for three-pointers against the above average Wilson Central zone defense. It was a miscalculation as The Golden Eagles didn’t and perpahs don’t have the quality of shooters to capitalize. Heath hit a nice corner three-pointer in the second quarter.
Both Adler Kerr and Maravich Bond fouled twice in the first 10 minutes, causing them to sit and watch.
Shelbyville played straight man-to-man defense, but they allowed too many points in the paint. Truthfully, many of the Wildcat successes came from structured offense and unselfish ball movement. Caleb Lawrence was a true shotmaker.
Jordan Beard buried a 20′ triple late in the opening half. Once again, Beard’s look and WCHS’ success came from a set play. For the moment, WIlson Central lead 29-18, their largest lead of the game to that point. The team truly understands what the coaching staff is trying to do. Execution is key for the undersized group of upperclassmen.
Erman Garcia finished off an and-1 to start the second half. Erman’s opening half really lacked bite and shooting accuracy.
The game sped up and easy buckets quickly followed. Instead of the long-legged, long-armed Golden Eagles benefiting from the quicker pace it was in fact Wilson Central that made the most hay. Midway through the third quarter, Wilson Central enjoyed a 42-26 lead.
Shelbyville finally hit a couple three-pointers after just hopefully heaving all evening. Jayson Jones and James Turrentine hit those outside shots. They closed the third frame on a 12-7 run.
After three quarters, 49-38, Wilson Central lead comfortably.
With a steal and an and-1, Jailain Anderson closed the game to 4-points late, 57-53. Wilson Central needed steady ball-handling and sharp decisions out of the ensuing timeout. Jordan Beard broke a trap, found his teammate, and the ball ended in leading scorer Lawrence’s hands. Instead of force a shot, Caleb kicked to an open Adler Kerr. Kerr buried the three-pointer and Wilson Central never looked back.
Wilson Central won their second game of the season, 68-58.
