Our series will take a look at the best teams in the state for each class with our rankings. Starting at #50 and going to #1, we will look at each class ranking across all classes starting now with #2.
1A #2: Lafayette Central Catholic
The Knights will be heading into this new season off a great 24-5 record and was one win away from making it to the State Finals last year. What makes this team scary is that they return nearly every varsity player from last season. They return lead scorer and rebounder, Carson Barrett (14.4 ppg, 10.9 rpg), who will undoubtedly be the leader of this squad. Look for breakout seasons from A.J. Bordenet (10.0 ppg) and Clark Barrett (8.1 ppg) as well. What makes this team so successful is that every player contributes and they really play as team. They are also extremely well-coached by Coach David Barrett. With an easy scheduled and early post-season, this team has all the opportunity to avenge their Semi-State loss and make it to the Sate Finals.
2A #2: Andrean
The Fighting 59ers are heading into this season as the reigning Class 2A State Champions. To add to that, they only lose one of their top five scorers from last year’s championship squad. All eyes again this season will be on to the tremendous junior trio Kyle Ross (16.9 ppg), Nick Flesher (9.0 ppg), and Ben Jones IV (7.0 ppg). Look for 2020 prospect Eric Goodes to provide the senior leadership and 2022 prospect Gabriel Gillespie to have huge breakout season. Andrean has the potential, the talent, and leadership to realistically repeat as 2A State Champions. Should be another exciting, winning season for the Andrean Fighting 59ers.
3A #2: Heritage Hills
The Patriots are coming off a 22-2 season and upset loss to Evansville Bosse in the first round of Sectional. They, however, return their top four scorers from last year’s team. They will be led and outstanding senior duo in Murray Becher (20.4 ppg) and point guard Simon Scherry (15.6 ppg). They also return a top 2021 power forward Blake Sisley (12.8 ppg). This is the type of team that is going to play with a chip on their shoulder all season long. Heritage Hills is too talented of a team just to get bounced in the first round of Sectionals. The Patriots should prove that last season’s post-season was a fluke and look to show that they are one of the top teams in the whole state.
4A #2: Bloomington South
The Panthers will be heading into this year coming off a 24-4 record and blowout Regional loss to Center Grove. This team is loaded with talent this season and returns nearly every important varsity player from last year’s squad. Anthony Leal (Indiana Commit), Noah Jager (Army Commit), and James Bomba (Miami-Ohio Commit) will likely be leading this team this year. Look for 2021 prospects Connor Hickman and Joseph Bomba to make a huge leap forward this season. This is arguably the most talented team team in the entire state. Could be one of the best seasons that legendary Coach J.R. Holmes has had in a few years. Bloomington South will be a top team this season and will be looking to win their first State Championship since 2011.
