During the spring, Gateway finished second at the Adidas Three Stripes in Louisville and Adidas May Classic in Indianapolis. In July, they finished fifth at the Mullen’s High Profile in Kansas and 4-1 at the xx in Las Vegas.
Clay Gayman 6’5″ Nevada: One of the big stock risers in the state’s 2018 class, the athletic combo forward was quite a beast as a scorer and rebounder. Gayman was an automatic double-double every time he stepped on the floor. He showcased a variety of post moves with good footwork and shooting touch, plus he routinely dunked in traffic. He was also an excellent shooter from the high post area and out beyond the 3-point line. He is on the radar of several Division I programs with lots of interest.
Isaac Weider 6’3″ Vienna: A nice sized wing whose shooting range is basically when he steps into the gymnasium. Isaac would routinely pull the trigger from well beyond the 3-point line, which can stretch an opposing defense beyond its limits. Despite his shooting range, he has the ability to score in different ways. He can get to the basket and has a nice float game in the lane. He can also post up and get buckets.
A.J. Sommer 6’5″ Parkway South: A very productive combo forward who helped the team win a lot of games with his versatility. He is an excellent 3-point shooter off the catch and coming off screens. He can also score inside and make short jumpers. A.J. is also a tough competitor who will battle defensively and fight for his share of rebounds.
Cameron Van Leer 6’4″ Pacific: A nice combo guard who has the combination of size, skills and a high basketball IQ. He uses his size well at the point as a fine passer who can see over the defense. He is good at getting in the lane and knocking down short jumpers and he can also stretch it out to the 3-point line. The son of a head coach, he plays with excellent poise and fundamentals.
Koby Klaus 6’1″ Grandview: A talented scoring guard who missed the July evaluation period with an injury. Has a real scorer’s mentality, which enabled him to averaged more than 20 points in his first two years of high school ball. He is a very good perimeter shooter, but he is also a determined driver who can find a variety of ways to get to the basket.
Darious Thomas 5’10” Fort Zumwalt South: The athletic combo guard missed the July evaluation period with a hand injury. When he is on his game, he is an aggressive scoring guard who loves to attack the basket at every opportunity. He is strong with the ball and very physical and explosive. He also did a nice job as a facilitator when he was playing with his high school team in June.
Justin Mathews-Williams 6’2″ Francis Howell North: An athletic wing guard who joined the team during the July evaluation period. Justin is a very determined and resourceful offensive player. He is a good perimeter shooter, but he likes to get to the basket and take the contact and get buckets. He does an excellent job of drawing fouls and getting the conventional three-point plays.
Jordan Holmes 5’11” Columbia (IL): A skilled point guard who had an impressive string of games during the month of July. Holmes is a nifty ball handler who can pass the ball. He can knock down open 3-pointers, but he also displayed the ability to get to the basket with dribble penetration.
Caleb Strauss 6’7″ Warrenton: A long, lanky post player who has a zest for rebounding. He was one of the leading rebounders in the St. Louis area as a sophomore. Strauss can score inside with a nice lefty touch, but he is more comfortable stepping out and shooting the 15 footer off the catch.
Adam Moore 6’5″ Duchesne: A very effective Stretch 4 who is a very good 3-point shooter off the catch. An ideal pick and pop forward who really spaces the floor. Adam works hard and he doesn’t make a lot of mistakes.
Tony Chukwuemeke 6’10” St. Louis Christian: A muscular post player with excellent size who had a definite defensive presence around the basket. His offensive game is limited to put backs, but he was a very capable rebounder and shot blocker.
