NORWALK, Ca.—One of the best events of the Fall evaluation period is the Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic, directed by Dinos Trigonis. Ron Massey, who coached at Long Beach Jordan High School, captured CIF Southern Section titles and mentored a plethora of student athletes during his tenure. If he were still pacing the sidelines to day, I’m sure he would be marveling at the dynamic talents of 7-foot senior Evan Mobley—who literally exhibited in every which way why he is considered the No. 1 prospect in the national class of 2020.
DJ Davis (Corona Centennial)
2020, PG, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Davis is a definitely streaky, but when he gets on a roll his ability to get his shot off quickly and with unlimited range. He is clever off the dribble, has a knack to get in the lane, and he possesses an array of finishing skills in the paint area.
Harrison Hornery (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-9, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hornery has the size and skill to be a productive 4-man in college. He isn’t overly explosive, but his touch is impeccable out to the stripe and he is playing more assertively in the paint as a finisher. Defensively, he needs to improve his lateral quickness to defend 4s at the next level, however.
Bryan Mex (Bishop Montgomery)
2021, SG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: The wiry Mex and stretched out some since his sophomore season and has now transferred from Lawdale/Leuzinger to Bishop Montgomery. Early on in his career in high school he was pretty much a spot-up shooter off the catch. However, this weekend he showed the ability to make plays in transition and he delivered a few nifty assists as well.
Noah Taitz (Bishop Gorman/NV)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
One of six schools will be getting an athletic pure shooter in the near future.Joel’s Take: The chiseled Taitz had a consistent weekend for the Gaels and he has recently cut his list down to 6 schools in Stanford, USC, Washington, BYU, St. Mary’s, and San Diego State. From day 1 his strength has been shooting and his mechanics are excellent. He gets tremendous lift on his shot and his release is smooth. If a defender closes out on him he can utilize the up-fake and blow by them for the dunk in the lane.
Aidan Prukop (Mater Dei)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Prukop, who just recently committed to Cal Poly, is one of the better sharp shooters in So-Cal and he gets great lift on his shot. He has gained strength and does a nice job of freeing himself up for shots with his cuts. He is a solid secondary ball handler and he is an improved finisher through contact.
