Continue ReadingMemphis’ Watkins Overton High School named wonderful AAU Basketball Program Director Shelvie Rose III to the position of Head Basketball Coach this off-season. Coach Rose ran Memphis Showtime, a team often ranked in the PrepHoopsTN Top 15 teams, and he ran it with pride. The program consistently merged tenacious guards together on the wooden rectangle.
Now Coach Rose must embrace a new challenge. He takes over for outgoing Coach Burgess, now an assistant at Millington.
Jason Coleman camped with Tennessee Tech.
Overton the School
Named for the longest tenured mayor in Memphis history, Watkins Overton previously housed several future professional singers. K. Michelle, Former Saliva Front Man Josey Scott, O’Landa Draper. Will Overton High earn a reputation as a basketball haven too?
Overton the Team
Jason Coleman displays the makeup of a small college backbone. He is currently ranked #119 in the state, as a member of the Class of 2020. Jason is the son of Coach Rose III. Expect him to average approximately 15 ppg and 6 apg in this his senior season. Watch his highlight reel from 2018-2019.
Coleman transferred in to Overton from Memphis Central. He is not the only transfer.
Avionne Suttle transferred from Class AA State Champions Wooddale High. Anterrio Jeffries and Jonathan Burns transferred from Southwind. Expect the starters for Overton to be: Avionne Suttle, Jason Coleman, Jonathan Burns, Mar’quon Dean, Anterrio Jeffries. Look for Jordan Frison to get heavy minutes off the bench.
Jeffries is the 67th best prospect in the state while standing 6-foot-6. His springy game makes this a dangerous lineup. Mar’quon Dean is a dangerous, largely overlooked bull guard. We have him ranked #28 in the state! The Class of 2021 is very, very deep and Dean is one of the 30 best prospects in that class. This backcourt of Dean and Coleman becomes one of the best in the city.
The Recruitments
Mid-September the new Overton hosted Lemoyne-Owen Assistant Coach Tony Farwar (pictured left above). Coach Farwar wanted to continue their recruitment of Anterrio Jeffries. He is a primary target for the program. In addition, Lemoyne-Owen expressed fresh interest in Avionne Suttle and Jordan Frison. Lemoyne-Owen College Head Coach William Anderson will drop by Overton High Friday, September 20th.
