With all five starters set to return, few teams will go into the 2019-20 season with more talent and experience.
GO-TO GUY: Doug Yankton
Yankton was an all-state selection as a junior and will be one of the best players in Class B this winter. The 6-foot-3 swingman does it all. He’s good for 15-20 points every night, using his handles, strength and explosiveness to get to the paint. He’s a strong playmaker. He rebounds at a high rate and can defend at a high level. There aren’t a lot of holes in his game and on a team with a lot of difference-makers, he’s the biggest one.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Jayden Yankton
Doug Yankton and Bronson Walter are the two prominent names in house but there are a number of talented returners that could elevate into bigger roles next year including JaeShaun Shaw and Jaymison Green. Jayden Yankton was a key guy as just a freshman a year ago and with his ability to shoot, get to the paint and defend, it wouldn’t be surprising if his numbers took a jump.
QUESTION: Can the Indians get back to state?
Four Winds/Minnewaukan looked like a heavy favorite to get through Region 4 and go to state again but lost to New Rockford/Sheyenne. The Indians will once again be the favorite in what might be the toughest and deepest region in Class B. If the Indians can get through that region, they’ll have as good a chance to win another state title as any team.
OUTLOOK
Few teams have as much talent as FW/M. The Indians have a terrific coach, good experience, size, athleticism and skill. They were a top-five team a year ago and all the key guys are back. The Indians always seem to play a great schedule, which means they’ll have plenty of opportunity to establish themselves as a team to be reckoned with. It should be a fun winter for them.
