Continue ReadingScottie Barnes, who helped lead University School in Davie to back-to-back FHSAA Class 5A state championships and GEICO Nationals appearances, announced on Twitter Monday that he is transferring to Montverde Academy in Central Florida for his senior season.
“First of all I would like to thank University School for the past two years of experiences and opportunities,” Barnes wrote. “This year I will continue my journey and senior year at Monteverde [sic] Academy. Lastly thank you for all my friends and teammates that pushed me to be the best I could be.”
“Yes, he is going [to Montverde],” confirmed a Nightrydas Elite assistant Monday. Barnes started for Nightrydas on the Nike EYBL circuit. “It was between them and IMG.”
Montverde has won four high school national championships (2013, 2014, 2015, 2018). A call to the Montverde basketball office went unanswered.
The 6-foot-8 Barnes is one of the top high school prospects in the country in the Class of 2020. He joins a stacked roster at Montverde, which includes Cade Cunningham, Langston Love and Moses Moody.
As a sophomore, Barnes posted a double-double (24 points, 10 rebounds) against Montverde in an all-Florida championship game at the 2018 GEICO Nationals in New York.
Barnes earlier this year listed the top 8 schools in his recruitment: Cal, Duke, Florida State, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, Ohio State and Oregon.
This summer during Nike EYBL I asked him where things stand and he said: “I’m not even worried about it. I’m just trying to play basketball. Probably during like my senior season and during school ball I’ll probably cut it down some more.”
The tall, rangy playmaker brings a lot of the table. Barnes is tough to stop at the offensive end. He scores, is an excellent passer and is tough on the boards. Defensively, he always brings it. His best quality, however, may be his infectious work ethic and never-give up attitude. Barnes has proven it on the highest of stages.
Barnes recently helped lead Team USA to the gold at the U-19 Worlds.
He started his high school career at Cardinal Newman in West Palm Beach his freshman year. Barnes then headed to University School, where he teamed with two-time Florida Mr. Basketball Vernon Carey Jr.
The Sharks went 60-7 in Barnes’ two seasons at U-School.
