Heinecke, a 6-foot-7 forward and one of the top frontcourt players in South Dakota, is transferring to Dell Rapids from Sisseton for his senior year after averaging about 13 points and eight rebounds. He’s excited about what could be coming for he and his teammates this winter.
“I know a few of the other guys and everyone has been great so far,” said Heinecke. “I’m excited to get going. It should be a special season. We have a good chance to go to state and make a run. I’m going to be in the gym every day I can to get better. The goal is to get to state. It should be a fun one.”
Heinecke spent the grassroots season with the Pentagon Schoolers where he had a chance to play against top-end players pretty much every weekend throughout the summer. That was huge for his development.
“It’s a great program; that was great for me,” said Heincke. I thought it was one to remember. I got to play with a bunch of good guys. A great coach. It was a ton of fun. Some good competition, got to get some good exposure. This was my best year I thought. It’s my last chance to get recruited. I thought I played well this summer. I worked hard to improve my game and I’ve made some progress.”
At 6-foot-7, Heinecke has a lot of skill. He’s a good perimeter shooter and pop guy in ball screen actions. He’s also shown throughout this summer that if his man hard hedges those actions, he’s capable of rolling, putting the ball on the floor and either getting to the basket or finding teammates. He’s got good footwork in the post and he rebounds at a high rate in his area.
“I used to be a pure post player since I was so much bigger but I had to learn to shoot from the outside,” said Heinecke. “I’m an inside-outside guy. I can stretch the defense and I’ve been working on driving and dribbling. I’ve been working on my athleticism a lot too. If that gets better, the rest of the game gets better.”
Heinecke’s drawn some college interest from local schools and he’s hoping a strong senior year can put him on the radar even further.
“That’s definitely the goal,” said Heinecke. “I’ve had some schools talk to me. Not a ton yet. I’m hoping I can draw some more interest this season. I played against some really good competition this summer and hopefully that exposure can help.”
