Continue ReadingCam VanDam played an integral role in Fargo Davies getting to the state championship game last season. The Eagles will go into the year ranked among the top-five teams in the state with VanDam ascending to a headlining role.
VanDam, a 6-foot-7 forward, stuffed the stat sheet as a junior for the Eagles, averaging better than 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks. His ability to impact the game in a multitude of ways was on full display throughout what was a breakout season. He’ll take on a bigger role next year, but he’s up to the challenge.
“It’s good to get with our school team and play with those guys,” VanDam said. “We need to figure out roles and fine tune things. We‘ve lost a bunch of guys so it’s good to see what we’ve got.”
There isn’t much VanDam can’t do. He’s one of the best defensive bigs in the state, possessing the size and strength to hold up against big, physical pure post guys, the athleticism and length to defend on the perimeter and the instincts and range to provide help all over the court.
“I just try to make plays for my team and contribute in any way I can,” he said. “Things can change between now and December of course but that’s my mindset. Make plays and help our team win.”
He’s an easy guy to play with on offense too, as he’s an effective off-ball player who can knock down 3-pointers and finish at the rim. And he’s a solid passer.
“A big thing I’m working on is trying to work on halfcourt stuff,” VanDam said. “Maybe be more of a threat in the halfcourt. Shooting is another thing I want to keep improving with.”
VanDam is spending the summer playing grassroots with ECI Prospects where he’s had the chance to go up against top competition. Between that and playing in summer camps throughout June with Fargo Davies, VanDam is excited about how things to come.
“You want to play against the best; that makes me better,” said VanDam. “It’s easy to play against bad teams and win. You want to play against the best competition. That’s how you get better. Plain and simple. It’s a ton of fun playing with those guys. We’ve got a lot of talent. They are great guys and fun to be around. Some of the best players in North Dakota.”
The to-be senior big man has drawn quite a bit of local interest when it comes to playing at the next level.
“I’ve heard a lot from Mary, Minot State and Concordia,” VanDam said. “We’ll see what happens. Planning on taking some visits once AAU wraps up.”
