The event was jam packed with with exciting games, solid teams, and loads of talented prospects who showcased their skills. We will be releasing several lists throughout the week including standouts in individual categories, player evaluations, and team spotlights. To start things off, here is a look at the seven prospects who saw their stock rise the most over the weekend. These players brought it all to the table with their big performances, consistent play, defense, and leadership and college coaches should keep a close eye on them throughout the spring and summer.
Top Stockrisers:
Chauncey Hughes – Semo Elite
Chauncey is an unsigned senior who is coming off a tremendous run with Cape Central during the high school season. He was phenomenal over the weekend on both ends of the floor. He is quick and shifty with tremendous handles and is very difficult to keep in front. Despite a smaller frame, he consistently slashed his way to the bucket or flew down the floor in transition and finished tough shot after tough shot. This included a dominant performance in the 17U championship win over a tall, long, and athletic SI Select team. He does not shy away from contact and can get off the floor and play above the rim. He also proved to be a long range threat burning up the nets from distance all weekend. He had probably the best off the dribble pull-up in the gym. Defensively, he is active and aggressive on the ball and opportunistic in the passing lanes. His skill-set and athleticism sets him up to run the point or play off the ball at the next level and I expect him to get swooped up and signed soon.
Kinyon Hodges – Semo Elite
Kinyon is the running mate to Chauncey Hughes both with Semo Elite and at Cape Central. If I had to pick an MVP of the event, he would probably have my vote. The high-flying wing was at a different level than his opponents most of the weekend. He is absolutely lethal in transition. When he kicks it into high gear he is the fastest player on the floor. He has a tight handle and effective crossover and when he gets in the lane he puts everyone within sight on poster-alert. He played above the rim, throwing down dunk after dunk and when he was on the floor there was an electric feel in the gym that couldn’t be mistaken. The lefty has a smooth stroke from beyond the arc as well, and when he is feeling it he is automatic. His length and athleticism allow him to be a force defensively. One of the best hidden gems in Missouri, it is almost criminal that he remains unsigned as a senior.
Doreante Tucker – Cape Elite
Yes, another Cape Central player. Is anyone surprised now as to why they had such a tremendous high school season? The last part of Cape Central’s three-headed monster is running with Cape Elite this summer and looking to reel in some offers heading into his senior year. Doreante is a smooth operator and is as clutch as they come. He has a complete game that was on display each time he took the floor. One of the better passers in the tournament, Tucker dished dime after dime and thread the needle to find his teammates with vision that only he possesses. He plays in high gear every second of the game and takes pride in being disruptive on the defensive end. He can score it off the bounce or with the jumper and showed that he had ice water in his veins burying a game tying three near the horn to force overtime against a very good Memphis Bulls team.
Jamal Anderson – Memphis Bulls
One of the most physical and energetic groups in the field last weekend was the Memphis Bulls, and their 16u was led by a good one in 6’5 F Jamal Anderson from Mississippi. A physical specimen with a high motor, Anderson was an automatic bucket if he caught the ball inside the arc. He can post and score, attack off the dribble from the high post, soar for offensive boards and put backs, and showed the ability to step out beyond the arc and knock down the three ball with consistency. He could probably score every point for his team if he wanted to, but he is an unselfish player and willing passer. He draws a lot of attention from defenses and did a very nice job of finding and hitting the open man. Jamal is a big-time talent. Expect his stock to go through the roof with a big summer for the Memphis Bulls.
Tyvin Garrison – Capital City Teamwork
There are a lot of projectable skills to Tyvin that impressed us. He has a very long, athletic build and played with some swagger in Paducah over the weekend. The lengthy wing was lights out from long range and made a killing from the corners. He also showed some impressive versatility with his ability to use his length and athleticism to post and score inside. He also has a nice hesitation dribble game that allowed him to get separation from his defender for a quality look. His wingspan and quickness allow him to be a disruptive defender. Tyvin is definitely one to keep an eye on that may be primed for a breakout summer.
Greg Wells Jr – SI Select
It is hard to stand out on a team that runs 11-12 deep with impressive talent, but Greg Wells did just that for a loaded SI Select squad. The lefty combo guard from Althoff came up big when he was needed the most in some battles on championship Sunday. He is an underrated passer who thread the needle with some impressive transition passes and showed flare with some no look drop offs from his baseline drives. He nailed some clutch three pointers and made plays off the bounce in crunch time, proving to be willing and able to handle high pressure situations. The honorable mention All-State performer from Althoff has been getting some sniffs from D-1 programs, and with room yet to improve and sharpen his game he will look to boost his profile this summer with an SI Select group that should make some noise.
Devon Barshow – Arsenal
Devon came on strong late in the season for a very good Marquette team in St. Louis and has kept the momentum going to start the spring circuit. The lengthy 6’5 wing really impressed us with his ability to rise up and stroke it from distance. He was solid as a catch and shoot threat and knocked down some big triples pulling up off the dribble as well. He is a dual threat, that can put it on the floor and use his length to finish above the rim. He is almost certain to make some highlights this summer in transition. We are definitely looking forward to keeping tabs on Devon this summer, college coaches need to have him on their radar for sure.
