One thing that Heins is doing in his spring and summer seasons is playing with the Sanford Pentagon National 16U team that will soon be hitting the road for events in Seattle, Orlando, and the Phoenix area. The experience has been good for Heins thus far.
“It’s gone very good,” Zach said. “It’s been great to play with a the Pentagon 16U National team, and work with Coach Bertram and his coaching staff.”
Heins plays the power forward spot but also has the strength and intelligence on the court to play some at the five. He’s solid around the basket but Heins wants to get better away from the paint too.
“I want to improve on my ball handling and also improve on my shooting,” said Heins.
Zach helped the Warriors to a 20-5 record last winter including a second place finish at state.
“For a Team moment I would say that making it to the state tournament and our 14 game winning streak would be our season highs,” Heins explained. “As an individual getting the opportunity to play in the state tournament was my top memory for the year.”
There should be many more memories to come considering that Heins, Logan Uttecht, Topher Zahn, and Seth Benson led a strong 2018 class and Washington returns Jack Talley, Angel Arroyo, Isaac Goeman, and several others for as trong senior group.
“Things are you looking positive to next winter,” said Heins. “There are several thing we can improve on before next season.”
Heins is also in strong academic standing and he’s a talented tight end and defensive lineman on the football team. Therefore college is something he is beginning to think about often.
“I have begun to think about the academic and athletic paths I would like to pursue,” Zach said.
“I would like to do something with science and math or possibly become a coach, and play either college basketball or football.”
