San Diego Players in the NCAA tournament
Taeshon Cherry, 6-8 F, Arizona State
A 2018 graduate of Foothills Christian, Cherry notched 5 points and 4 rebounds in a “First Four” win over St. John’s. He followed it up with 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block in a second-round loss to 6th-seeded Buffalo on Thursday.
Miles Norris, 6-10 F, Oregon
Norris, who played at Mater Dei Catholic and Helix High before graduating from Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, played 1 minute in the 12th-seeded Ducks 72-54 upset of No. 5 seed Wisconsin. Norris’ Ducks defeated UC Irvine in the Round of 32 to advance to the Sweet 16.
Tommy Rutherford, 6-9 C, UC Irvine
A 2016 graduate of Grossmont High, Rutherford played 11 minutes and grabbed three rebounds in the 13th-seeded Anteaters 70-64 upset over No. 4 Kansas State. Rutherford scored 10 points in the Anteaters’ round of 32 defeat against Oregon.
Ben Perez, 6-4 SG, Iona
The 2014 San Marcos graduate played 31 minutes and contributed 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the 16th-seeded Gaels’ 88-73 loss to top-seeded North Carolina.
Eric Monroe, 6-3 PG, Yale
The 2016 St. Augustine graduate did not play in the Bulldogs 79-74 second round loss to No. 3 LSU.
Jack Beach, 6-3 SG, Gonzaga
Beach, a 2015 graduate of Torrey Pines High, played two minutes in the Bulldogs first-round win over 16th-seeded Farleigh Dickinson.
Tim Saunders, 6-3 SG, Villanova
Saunders, a 2015 graduate of Torrey Pines, did not play in Villanova’s two NCAA tournament games.
